Shower wall sealant not sticking

Bob_B50

Purchased a gulfstream Capri
In the shower when we bought it we noticed the sealant on the seams of the paneling was coming off. The dealer re-sealed the seams and its somewhat holding. But it appears the caulking doesnt stick very well to the paneling material. Is there a specific type of caulking that may stick better? My only thought so far was to scuff the area at the seams with sandpaper to give the caulking something to grab.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Jayco had the same problem for YEARS. Here is what we used and is BETTER than Silicone. This DAP you buy the CLEAR. It comes out white but dries completely CLEAR, NOT a opaque glob like clear silicone. It will adhere to glass/fiberglass and Plastic. Doug

DAP
Kwik Seal Plus 10.1 oz. White Kitchen and Bath Adhesive Caulk with Microban

That's good stuff^^^^^
Like the workability and how it cures

Lexel is excellent as well. Cures crystal clear, is flexible, tough, and sticks well.

Yes, it is good, but DAP is almost 1/2 the price. Doug

There is that, but Lexel is not water borne and seems to cure faster and a little tougher than the DAP. It comes out of the tube clear.

BINGO. I like the fact the DAP comes out white and cures completely clear. Being white, you see any possible gaps or areas you may have missed and can then fill in immediately. Doug

Silicone seems to be the default sealant for just about everything, but it actually is a really crappy choice for most. As mentioned, silicon (or anything else) won't stick to old silicone. And it can be extremely difficult to remove all traces of the old silicone.

It's ironic that silicone sealant doesn't actually stick that well to most surfaces, yet when it falls of, it leaves minute traces that won't let anything else stick.

Supposedly silicone will not stick to old silicone. So clean the area well.

Clean the area well where the sealant is to be applied then wipe with vinegar.

It has been reported that silicon sealant once used does not allow future sealants to stick. Possibly using a product to remove silicon traces and sanding the seams will help
