Thermister Question

Bought a 2010 Cougar with Dometic 2662 frig. Took it out this weekend and found that the frig would not get cold on A/C, the freezer worked fine. On gas both worked good. With those symptoms could the thermister still be bad or does it work with both gas and A/C?

Added: We had the unit cooling for 2 days on gas before we left and left it running until we got the a/c hookup at camp.

first, if you have the dometic with the thermistor on the fin, did you make sure it is clipped on and in the coldest position? If not that could be part of your problem.

Second, the 120V element doesn't have the heating capability of gas. So, you can run into situations where you have symptoms like you have in hot weather. Once cooled down with gas, AC may be able to keep it cool, it just will either take much longer to get it cool, or never be able to get there, especially if it is very hot and you load the fridge up with stuff that isn't cold.

However, if the freezer is cooling, then the AC heater is working. It just may not be able to vaporize enough amonia to get the fridge section cool.

IIRC dometic mentions this in the manual.

The BTU Heat capability of AC(120) is the same as LP. The refers are designed to cool correctly on either Heat Source. Doug

Checked fuses behind black cover (all three good). Had 44.7 ohms to heater element. From what I saw on youtube that was in specs?

Did not check camp power...We're newbies so it never occurred to us that we could be running at undervoltage since A/C cooled fine.

I guess next step is to get it to A/C power so I can see if I have 120V from the board to the element.

Beginning to think we didn't give it long enough on A/C..we had it cooled 2 days on gas before we left and switched to a/c once at campground and noticed that it (main box), freezer was fine) was getting warmer with condensation on fins rather then colder after an hour or so of running - so we switched back to gas.

If you were in a park, did you check the voltage? I would bet on somewhat low voltage, given the heat and crowds.

IF it froze the freezer on 120, then the 120 side is GOOD. As the other poster stated, the Thermister is NOT your problem. 120 Elements WORK or they do NOT., They do not heat partially. That means either you did not give the refer time to fully cool(24 hours) or there is a mechanical problem with the mounting of the Heat Element. Remember, the freezer will get extremely cold within a few hours but the lower will take another 20 hours. Doug

The thermister is nothing more than a thermostat attached to the fins. It works on both A/C and propane. Look for a bad heating element, broken wire, blown fuse....Dennis
