2015 SRW Ram 3500 Cummins (First year review)

Ok, so not quite a year (will be October 27th). But I wanted to do this and give a true, honest opinion to anyone possibly looking at something similar to mine as there wasn't a great deal out there info wise when I purchased mine from a real consumer actually using the truck every day.

First off, I love the Cummins. It still exhilarates me and makes me feel like a fat kid in the candy store every time I drive it! The power, fuel economy, quietness, and overall pure refinement of this engine is truly remarkable. I can get 21mph + or - interstate running easily (yes, that's hand calculations also) found the EVIC display to be very accurate also. DEF usage is basically irrelevant. Ive put just under 5 gallons in since new and is sitting at 10,887mi as I type this and half a tank of DEF on board.

Towing this year has been in the neighborhood of 2500 miles (absolutely nothing for some of you guys I know). Two trips to Florida and 6-8 other local outings to CG's in our area of West GA and East AL. My 5th weighs in the neighborhood of 9500 loaded and this truck handles it literally like child's play. But soon I hope to get a different rig slightly larger which was what made the decision to go 3500 in the first place. I also have a 24ft deck over gooseneck that I haul my tractor on that is equally man handled by the truck. The exhaust brake is now a mandatory item for me! What a difference it makes. My IBC has worked flawlessly too. I've read others who have had problems with them and I'm not sure why cause I couldn't be more pleased with mine. Towing MPG are anywhere from low of 12.2 to high of 14.5 depending on roads, wind, speed, and of course, weight being moved. The trans has been very good also. I have the 68RFE and yes, it shift's kinda awkward sometimes, but overall I'm very pleased with it and glad I saved the money vs. the Aisin. Its a fabulous trans I'm sure, just not warranted for my needs.

Overall truck. I sometimes wish I would have gotten a few more bells and whistles, but the Tradesmen package mine has included the chrome package, convenience package, inc. satellite radio, bluetooth, back up cam and sensors, electronic 4x4, factory sprayed liner, etc. So even though its not loaded, its extremely functional and comfortable. The things I miss are...audio controls on steering wheel (which I plan to add sometime), more adjust-ability of power seats, power folding mirrors, more options to monitor instrumentation display, dual climate control. The last one I always thought was kinda silly. But anything below say 75 and my wife is freezing and I'm sweating bullets. But for the price difference, I honestly don't think I'd change it if I could. I added seat covers (Marathon covers) and like them just as well as any leather I ever had. So although nice, I dont really miss the leather. The junk Firestone TransForce HT's it came with were traded off pronto! I now have MasterCraft AXT's and love them so far. Great ride, traction, aesthetics, and very reasonably priced! The ride is outstanding for a 1 ton truck IMO. Not having TPMS works out great as when I'm not towing I lower the rears to 60 psi and it works out great. And best of all, no aggravating light in my face babysitting me. I realize this can be a PITA to some, but I have a compressor in the garage which makes the adjustment's a breeze.

And most importantly, not one single issue so far (knocking on wood). I came from Ford and could not be happier with my decision. I will admit though that the new 2017 SD is really something! I look forward to seeing how things work out for them. Competition is a great thing and will be beneficial across all brands. But for the near future, ain't nothing prying this Cummins away from me! I hope this will help someone out. And if I left something out that anyone would like to know, please ask!

Grit,
Not too many steep hills between CT and VT. If I had more time I would have slowed down and got a few mpg more. Get over 70 and mpg starts to drop off quickly. Starting from dead stops or resuming speed after having to drop from cruise speed, is where most of my mpg goes away.
Back roads with few stops, even at 45mph, can net 16 mpg.
I never broke 17 on my old gasser. Low hp 6.8l, 3spd w/OD auto running 4.30's. That was new and downhill with tail wind!.
Haven't towed yet, about 1700# is the most I've loaded on her so far. Winter usually sees about 1100# of concrete block and PVC tubes filled with sand for ballast.

Got really good mileage from Ely 6400' and a pass South of town down to Lost Wages 2000', then lost it again climbing 1700' to Kingman with wind on the nose. Was at 15 MPG South of Alamo, Nv for 30 some miles. Chris

Well we towed in the wind most of the day. Stability was fine, mileage was 9.6 for the first fill today at Jackpot, Nv from Caldwall, Id. The next fill will be in the morning. Most likely is going to be 9 MPG. I think I was in an active regen or really strong head winds South of Jackpot. Chris

You're also pulling a lot of grades, some at pretty high elevation. Much different scenario than guys who post mileage numbers towing back east. Ely is close to 7000' if I'm remembering correctly.

I drove to Vancouver WA from NW WA and back yesterday a 400 mile round trip. Dually with 4.10's hitch tools toolbox and wife. Speed limit is 60-70 both about the same distance. I was reading 17.2 but hand calc will be closer to 16.8. Actually not bad considering 10K and the gears.

Bottom line I really don't care about mileage, it's all about doing a specific job!

They're sweet trucks fo sho, but 24mpg at 70 unless its downhill with a tailwind, in a 4wd mega dually HO is giving it a little too much credit.

FLT got 24.7 about a year and a half ago. The test was at 65 MPH. Not sure why they don't do these tests anymore.

And I agree, that is hard to believe.FLT 2500 RAM MPG Test.

"I changed the fluid in the differential with Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90"

Just a FYI AMZ/OIL recommends 75-110 but still a great choice. Yes the Mopar fluid will not go past 20K with towing involved. I have Blackstone report to prove it.

Count me in, 2014 3500 4wd Limited Megacab DRW Aisin w/3.73s. Still under 13k. Daily driver, in town, with the occasional road trip. With 1500# in the bed (got hurt and can't get it unloaded at the house yet), my in town straight to work is a lot of stop & go @ 11 mpg. Get her out on the open road she'll get 24mpg at 70mph.
My last truck was a Ford gasser F250 Lariat. It was nice when new, but the Ram Limited beats it hands down on every point (except the new bed rail heights on the new trucks)

I can be added to the list of owners who love their Ram 3500. I have owned my 2013 3500 Megacab DRW 4x4 Laramie with the Cummins and G56 manual transmission since April, 2014 and it has been a fantastic truck. It pulls our 16k lbs triple slide four season fiver with ease; it has tons of low end pulling power and the exhaust brake is awesome. In fact I usually end up having to give the truck some throttle on downgrades on all but the steepest mountain grades because it slows so much. It nets 10-11 mpg towing and 17-18 mpg solo which I'm very happy with. I have noticed that the truck is consistently getting more powerful as more miles are put on it.

We also love the Laramie package with all of it's cool features including heated and ventilated leather seats, heated steering wheel, bluetooth, USB ports, touch screen controls, integrated brake controller with several adjustments for 4 different trailers, backup camera, cargo camera, instrument panel that can be customized to your liking, LED lighting, etc.

I did have a "grabby" feeling from the rear differential that was especially noticeable when taking off when towing. I changed the fluid in the differential with Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 and I noticed right away when towing on the weekend that the feeling was gone so the fluid was definitely breaking down. Be sure to follow the service intervals on this one.

I was a die hard Ford man until this truck and have absolutely no regrets on my choice!
