2016 CTD 6.7 oil change questions

Getting ready to do the first oil change on the new CTD. I've watched all the youtube videos regarding the PITA oil filter removal and spillage avoidance. Just wanted to get some feedback on how others are getting the filter out of the very small window provided in the fender well. Some use the Gino's cap off tool to seal the filter at the top, but that looks like a hassle. Others drop the filter into a zip lock bag or trash bag. What are you folks doing?

Also, Costco has a good deal on on 3 gallons of Chevron Delo 400 SDE oil ($28.99) and would like to know if others are using this oil.

I'll be using the Stratopore filter by the way.

Here in N.C. on all 2016 Dodge HD trucks the first 4 oil changes are free ( GAS OR DIESEL) if done within 2 years. Might want to look into it.You can use any dealership also. I just done my first one today.

Cummins, is that how you do yours? I've looked at both ways (coming through the side, etc)

Nope, never have. It's never caused any problems with any vehicle I've been around and I was actually taught early-on not to pre-fill due to the potential of adding contaminants on the back side of the filter. I did do some research on it after I bought this truck and found nothing that convinced me it was a good idea - if anything I found more that recommended not doing it. Truthfully I don't see it as a significant deal either way.
Good point, and on another topic, Dodge instructs NOT TO PREFILL your fuel filters when replacing.

2. What does Cummins say?
Couple more questions:

1. If the oil filter is not pre-filled on a Cummins 6.7, how long does it take for the oil pressure to normalize?

2. How long can a Cummins 6.7 run with little to no oil pressure without sustaining any damage?

Exactly , was told by a tech at a Ram dealership thats the way he does it, but I have yet to try it now with having the Genos cap.

They looked at me funny when I mentioned taking the turbo intake off 🙂 Which is the way I did it the first two times, now I know why they looked at me funny.

But I do prefill .

Many vehicles have the filter horizontal so pre filling can not be done. Doesn't seem to be that necessary to me. what am I missing?? Maybe less mess.

A couple minutes to remove the intake and this is what you are looking at. Very easy to R&R.

No special tools needed.

I didn't pre fill before the Cummins, but the filter holds almost a full quart of oil, just too much fun time to fill dry.


Yes very true. Actually one quart will fit with room to spare just let it settle for a bit.

There is NOTHING wrong with pre filling as long as you don't dump anything into the filter. You would have to be blind and very careless to let that happen. Cummins recommends doing it. I have pre filtered EVERY filter that I could with WELL over one million miles driven and serviced with no issues.

I admire this guy's attempts to come up with a clean process to change the oil on these trucks which require too much effort. As for the prefillers you can prefill to your hearts content using this cap.

I have always pre-filled my oil filters. The angle needed to wiggle through the fender well prevents you from getting the filter full. However, you can fill it about 2/3 and not spill has you put it in place.

At bare minimum this amount of oil pre-wets the filter media and allows for quick flow when engine starts.

I didn't catch that your truck is 2WD. Actually, all joints in the linkage are non-serviceable so you have nothing to grease.
