2016 Ram 3500. Issues?

Hi All,

I'm thinking about looking at this truck:

2016 Ram 3500

I know it has a few outstanding recalls, water pump, transmission interlock, and a tailgate latch problem. Other than that, is the 2016 a good year for emission issues? Other problems?

The price is OK, but on the high side according to KBB. I'm not sure how much they are willing to deal yet.

The truck is a 1.5 hour drive so if there are known problems with this year I'll pass.

Thankk, Drew

OP, if your existing truck is in good shape you will have absolutely no problem selling it privately for top dollar. That makes dealing on a new truck much simpler and increases your bargaining power.

Hi all, original poster here,

I looked at the truck in my post Saturday. Nice truck, drove great, had every option I can think of, however, they were not even interested in dropping a single dollar. The truck had a dent in the tailgate and cheap replacement tires, Ironman brand, that I never heard of. On top of that, they offered me $4K less than KBB trade for my truck.

I don't know if that's representative of the used marked in Mass, but I walked out.

I'll keep looking. I have looked at Dillon Ram and like those prices. I'll try to use that info to negotiate something around here. It's getting late in the model year, so I may have to wait until the 19s are out.

Just remember one thing: The 2018s are still coming in from the factory. Once the 2019s start up, your chances of getting a 2018 close to EXACTLY what you want start dwindling.... Depends on how fussy you are. The truck that I just bought is CLOSE to exactly what I wanted and my dealer had to get it from another dealer 500 miles away. In fact, that dealer hadn't even received it yet since it was still on its way from the factory. I was starting to think about just ordering one with the exact options I wanted, but then he found the one I ended up buying.

That's why they call em stealerships!
You can get a brand new loaded Bighorn for $50k easily and a Laramie for $54-55k. Add another $2600 for the Aisin, but dun I if the one you looked at was. Odds are 68 rfe.
Good for you walking out. Yes people pay the inflated prices every day. That's why the dealer would t budge. Either need to find one they've sat on forever, or the most gawdawful color or just buy a new one from a volume dealer and be done with it.

If you plan on the convienence of trading, plan on paying to do that. Car shopping is no differnet now than any other time in history.
If you have a sweet 06 diesel, it would pay ALOT to sell it outright. Somewhere between 5-10k over what the stealer will offer you.

Did you try "building" that truck new on Ram's website and then doing a dealer inventory search?
Quite a few dealers will show their selling price when you click on the "View on dealers website" link in the inventory search.
Bought my '17 dually with aisin, rear air suspension, fifth wheel prep, and other options for $60,000 new back in March.

Drove from Jersey to VA to get it, but it was worth it.

The 2013 and up Ram/Cummins are great trucks. As noted there have been some recalls on them but they are very capable and solid overall. We love our 2013.

I got my '18 Laramie for less than that in NH

Bought our '16 Ram Cummins Tradesmen with several options from Dillion. MSRP was $56,000. Their price was $42,500. It's worth a call before overpaying on a used truck with an unknown history.

In July we took a trip west to Banff/Jasper. This was the first time in big hills and mountains. I was happy with my 2016 6.4 Hemi 2500 until then, so I started thinking about diesels. When coming back across the border in Montana I remembered hearing about this Dennis Dillon place and looked on their website since we wouldn't be too far away heading south. They didn't have much of what I was looking for with the fifth wheel prep so after some googling I found Peterson Ram near Boise also, which had about 8 or 9 Laramies equipped the way I wanted. And they were $13k below sticker (everybody qualifies). Outstanding price but I wasn't able to negotiate enough of a trade-in on the highway with the guy. He was off by at least $3k. And who knows what surprises are hidden in their price. We ended up going to our local dealer where I got $10k off sticker plus top KBB trade-in amount-$5k more than Peterson, for a similarly equipped Laramie.
There are nice used trucks out there, but a new one isn't all that much more if you do your homework and know what a good deal is and know what a reasonable price is for both you and the dealer.
I picked up my new truck a week ago today.

I paid $37,800 for mine. I think that truck is way overpriced, even with the 4x4 and low miles. Mine has been a great truck for hauling our 5th wheel trailer. Would not hesitate to buy it, but you need to get them down about $10,000.

Wow that was a good price you got.

The KBB price for a dealer sale, 2016 3500 Laramie diesel, no extra options, in my zip code is $43.5K to $50.5K.

KBB price

KBB doesn't buy vehicles. Prices are determined regionally by what they go for at auction, information we don't have access to.

I did what has been suggested, I used Dillon as a price point and found a local dealer that was willing to price match.

Thanks everyone for the input. It was very helpful. I'll take a look at it tomorrow and see how willing to deal they are.

Though not a 3500, I've got the 2500 CTD with the same drivetrain. So for it's been very reliable and I love the truck after 2 years and 30K miles. Fit and finish is outstanding IMO.

Yes, I did have the water pump replaced under recall and will soon have the trans interlock thing done. Every vehicle I've ever owned had multiple recalls so nothing unusual here. I've been on the forum for 14 years and everybody seems to love their Cummins powered Ram.

To me the reliability seems to be the same as the later Ford and Chevy trucks. I don't see one being more reliable than the other based on feedback from this forum, other than the flack from the old 6.0 PSD engine.

Nobody makes a bad truck any more! If you like the truck and it's in good shape, go for it!

I think I got an extra good price here in Texas, due to 3 reasons.
1. no 4x4, and everyone here wants 4x4
2. SRW, around here in horse country, everyone wants 1 ton with
DRW
3. Mine was high mileage for a 2 year old pickup.

However, deals are out there, and I think you need to lean on them for a lot better price.
