IH has not had a lot to do with it. I suspect the only reason for the joint venture at all is because IH has plants available to build it and GM would have had to make room and IH really needs a truck that runs in this class. The engine and powertrain are GM, cab is GM. The remainder and assembly is IH is my understanding. I used to be a real IH fan, but they have not done much in the last 10 years except lose marketshare and step on themselves. The lack of adapting to SCR and fighting the EPA about bankrupted the company. I want to believe they have their act together for this project. I would have prefered that GM had just built it themselves and let IH rebrand it.
I just hope they ride better than the last 5500 4X4's. Great truck for towing, but the ride was so jaring that it was uncomfortable to drive. The interior was also not up to task of a HD truck in the last series.
Based on some of the spy photos I was really concerned that this was going to be an ugly duckling. Either they changed the look or IH is getting the ugly version, but this looks really good from the front. My dealer is planning on 5 of them and I have spoken for one of them. 5500 4X4 CC 84" CA.
