I am looking to purchase a 3/4 ton diesel and I am conflicted as to buy a 2 wd or 4 wd? There seems to be way more 4 wd on the market, but I don,t think I need the extra moving parts of 4 wd, everything cost more on a 4 wd for maintenance. I would like to hear from those of you who have first hand knowledge??

Clueless in Texas:)

We were boondocking this past weekend in South Georgia. It was raining when we left and had been doing so for the last 24 hours. The road we had to leave on until we hit pavement is clayish-dirt-mixed limerock, and it was a disaster. It took 4WD to get through that road. For the record, this is the only time I've ever needed 4WD for anything during the course of normal driving/towing. Of course, the previous statement doesn't account for all the foolish things I've done over the years whereby 4WD became a necessity of the circumstance LOL.

2 things to live by.
Never let your SO drive your truck.
Don't tow in snow or mud.

Easy peasy.

If your ego needs it, by all means get it.

Otherwise, since you are asking the question, no you do not need it.

Get it, be done with it and enjoy it when u need it. It's not the cure all for every situation, but sure enough get u out of trouble if u use it smartly.

If you have a need for 4x4 then get a truck with 4x4. If you don't, then don't!

For towing you do not NEED 4x4. 99% of my towing is in 2x2 and I live in the snow belt.

If you have a need for a 4x4 you know it. If you don't know what that need is, then you don't need it.

Is your wife ever going to drive the truck? If the answer is yes then 4wd is priceless!

Here is why. We were staying at a RV Park in Desert Hot Springs my wife had taken our LongHorn Dually into play Springs to do some shopping. It was near dark I get this distressed call from her saying I am stuck! She took a road the GPS told her to take and it turned from gravel to sand. I told her how to turn on 4wd. She tried to move but it was too stuck. So then I explained how to activate 4 low. She did and drove the truck right out no problem turned around drove until she hit pavement and returned to 2 hi.

So for me that one time paid for the 4wd!

I have been in some CG's that had a slope and pea gravel on the roads. thus backing in a TT I used my 4 wheel feature. keeps the back wheels from spinning.
