AC recirculation mode ... like in your truck

Just set up in a Good Sam-affiliated campground in Clovis NM (Traveller's World) and even before we got to the CG the DW said that the area smells like a sewer. I figured that it must be manure being used in nearby fields and thought no more of it.

After we set up and had the AC on for a while I could not understand why my BW tank was smelling so much then I figured that it was the "perfumed air" from ourside coming in via the air conditioned air and also into my bathroom vent when my Fantastic Fan was off. 😞

At times like this I wish that the AC in the RV had a recirculation mode like in the truck.

To add insult to injury, there is an Air Force base next door so this should make for an interesting night. Good thing I am just passing through.

One good thing - their Internet connection is excellent!

Another thing to watch for with that FF running on exhaust, having your gray tank valve open will invite those smells into your TT as well. And every time you flush your toilet, you're doing the same thing for your black tank.

No more smell after 10PM that same night. No stinky AC from bacteria either. The nice "hell-weather" we have here in Houston makes sure of that. 😉

If you smell it again then it may be bacteria on the coils. After the AC stops running, there's little bits of water that's left behind on the coil and near the coil. Bacteria can grow in this moisture especially if air continues to move past the coils after the refrigeration portion has turned off. You end up with a smell similar to an old wet towel or socks you've exercise in (Phew!). If that's the case then you just need to clean the evaporator coils and the drain.

Cattle lots are not bad at all. Wait until you are next to a hog confinement barn while they are pumping out the manure pit. I know, this is part of what I do for a living. Takes days to get the smell off of your hands should you touch any.

Next week on Tuesday I have to load out hogs and hot water pressure wash the barn down. If any on is in the area stop in and I'll give you a education on smell. I'll even pay you to help me do the job!!

X2 - hogs are pretty rough, but the nose is amazing. Once it has smelled enough it turns off, and you don't notice it anymore. Other's do though...

Ain't that the truth. I once had to slop out some pig pens and can attest to the extreme stench and the fact that it takes days for the smell to go away.

After leaving Clovis and crossing over to N.Texas there were many stockyards that we passed and the smell was pretty strong all throughout.

The A/C in your trailer is always in the recirculation mode just like when you put the same mode on in your truck. All the intake air for the A/C comes from inside the air conditioned space. Unlike a vehicle where you can draw in outside air the A/C in your trailer doesn't have that mode of operation.

Reality is you probably did just get used to the stench. After a while all the receptors in your nose related to a particular smell get filled and your brain stops registering them. Unless you get away from that smell for a while, you stop smelling it.

Yes, this is why people can go without showering for long periods of time. They just don't smell themselves after a while! :B

The FF running on exhaust will pull outside air in thru the MANY air leaks that ALL RVs have. This will bring the outside smells inside.
Your TT has weep holes in every window. The stove exhaust fan is never a perfect seal. There are many protrusions for plumbing and electrical under the unit. These holes though hidden from view can be quite large and WILL let air in.

In short the FF will make the situation worse.
