Arctic Fox 996 Slide out issues

Apparently there are issues with the bottom of the driver side/kitchen slide outs.

The rollers are digging into the plastic that covers the wood bottom of the slide.

I read about this on another forum so I checked mine. Sure enough it was starting.
Mine was not as bad as some other ones, but it was starting so it was time to put a halt to it.

Here is what mine looked like:

Here is the material I used.

18 gauge metal. 15 1/2 X 6"

Square Driver Head screws. Stainless Steel. And what I like about these is that they are the same screws that AF uses, so you have some extras.
I used the #8 X 3/4. Also put wood glue on threads during final install.

Pretty straight forward. Total cost around $30, and a couple of adult beverages!

I lifted the slide out just enough to get the rollers to turn. No need to go any higher.
Drilled the holes, did a test fit, then painted them, (primer and Engine Ceramic Grey paint),seems to hold up better. Don't forget to rough up the metal before painting.

Nothing fancy here. Just a way to get it off the rollers

Drilled out and test fit before painting

Painted

Installed. I was wondering how the screw heads would handle the seal while moving in and out. But they slide right over them, and don't hang up at all.

Hope this helps, better than taking it to the dealer for a couple of weeks.

I checked before I did the plate install, and they were rolling. I also sprayed on some 3M Teflon spray so that may have helped.

Here is the passenger side/dinette picture for a visual reference. Not sure why they did the kitchen with rollers, the only reason I can see is that because the kitchen slide does not go out as far as the dinette side, they thought it might not warrant it.

As long as it works, I am OK with it.

Good to know that mine doesn't have the rollers. I am not as talented as dmaxpuller at doing a fix.

No rollers.

Correct, it's a different drive setup, but both manufactured by PowerGear. The 996 is based on the 990 and shares the same dinette/refer slide room including the slide room drive system. The kitchen slide on the 996 is a different design (PowerGear Slim Rack Slide Out System) that has the rollers that support the slide room.

Nice fix on the slide. I have a 2015 Arctic Fox 990 & I looked in my Owners packet & found that my camper has the Power Gear slide-out system.
The description says it consists of 4 major components.

--Inner rail assemblies are designed to support the room weight.
--A 12 volt DC gear motor will operate the room using power from the on-board unit battery.
--Slide-out systems are equipped with a manual override that allows you to extend/retract the room in the event of loss of power
--A specially designed control that gives the user full control of the room movement, in or out. The control has a load sensing capability that stops the motor when the room reaches its fully extended or retracted positions.

Doesn't mention any rollers so I don't know if this system uses them or not.

My 2015 AF 1150 uses the Power Gear slide mechanism...I know the Schwinteks were causing issues with some of the Lance TC's...its the main reason we didn't buy a Lance that we really liked. I think Lance dumped the Schwinteks last year for their slideouts because of the problems. Their factory 'fix' was the same solution as yours. Is that a Schwintek slide?

Not sure what brand it is. It works fine, have never had issues with it.
But that brand name does ring a bell.

I think this will cure the problem. The metal is not thick enough to put the slide out of adjustment. As with any camper brand, there is always going to be something that we the customer finds that can be improved. The AF996 is awesome. If this is all the problems we have, I can deal with it.

Thanks for all the positive remarks.

Nice fix.

With the heavy weight of that slide, It'd have thought AF should use more than 2 rollers, to distribute the weight across more rollers.

Great post. The fix could save a lot of future repair cost.
