Arizona To Alaska

This is the first post of many of our truck camper trip from Arizona to Ketchikan, Alaska. We need to be there June 1.

Last day in Arizona was a long one. Up at 0430, pack apartment, work from 0700 to 1930, drive six hours in the dark and find a place to camp. BRAINDEAD!

Arrived in Page, AZ sometime after midnight, VERY tired. Then drove north a bit, then east and found a place to camp along the Smokey Mtn Road.

Woke up four short hours later and found the Utah desert blooming.

Camped way down there somewhere. Drove this in the dark, after being up for 21 hours. Ugghhh.......

Rode some nice narrow washes to wake the brain up in the morning.

After riding, coffee, and a shower, it was time to head out. Rain was coming, and this road turns to snot when it's wet.

In SLC now for the week wrapping up last minute stuff, then heading out.........more at that time.

Is that little guy really riding a two wheeler with no training wheels? Wow! Pretty advanced -- great natural balance and coordination. Please post pix when he takes the wheel of the truck on the way to Alaska! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Woke up to overcast and cool temps. Did a 20 mile round trip ride up Richmond Peak. Short drive up to Glacier National Park for a couple days. Bit early for the park, as much of it is still closed. Regardless, hanging here for a couple nights to avoid driving, hang at the like, ride on the closed road, and hike a little.

Low key day waking up to a misty morning in Blogett Canyon, a nice ride up to a scenic overlooks, then coffee with an old friend in Hamilton, and lunch with another in Missoula. Now a night on the shore of Lake Inez, then to Glacier tomorrow.

Day 5:

Left Challis and followed the Salmon River into the Bitterroot Valley and into Blogett Canyon for the night. I climbed here 20+ years ago, and it's nice to see the place again. Rainy now, hanging out at a free five place campground with a drunk campground host.

More photos here in larger format.

As usual, morning ride.

Good entertainment.

Day 4:

We were going to stay up high for another night, but opted to head to lower elevation and warmer temps. A long, but pleasant drive out of the mountains followed by another free campsite along the Salmon River with temps in the high 60's.

Kids like camping.

Camp for the night.

Alright, here's a few days.........hanging out in the rain in Blogett Canyon with a little 3G, so why not.

I'm not posting all the pics. If you're interested, here's the link to the others.

Misty morning at the reservoir campsite.

24 miles of dirt into the mountains, with the last four miles being very rocky and slow, but worth it.

Cold rainy night, with temps well below freezing.

Amen to that. Cell service suffers immensely! Wifi works at some Rv parks.

Travel safe!

Instead of stopping in Mackay go on up to Stanley and hit the hot springs and everything. Moved from SE Idaho to Anchorage last February. Did the drive from Seattle to Anchorage in 5 days in Feb but didn't stay in the camper. We say -50 a couple nights while driving. Would be cool to do it this time of the year before all the summer traffic. Have fun and stay safe.

Might be hard to do the "live" update thing as we typically camp remote, no cell service, then in Canada our data plans are useless and we'll be remote. We'll see how this goes..........

Welcome to my world.

All the best to you and your family on this grand and great adventure. It is nice to see someone else going slow and discovering the details around them. Be safe and will look forward to when you can and do report in.

Left SLC after 8 days wrapping up loose ends, new tires, new fuel pump, etc........then headed up to Mackay, ID for a night. Tomorrow we are heading into the Pahsimeroi area for two nights, then to Hamilton.

Might be hard to do the "live" update thing as we typically camp remote, no cell service, then in Canada our data plans are useless and we'll be remote. We'll see how this goes..........
