Bike mounting- Would like input.

I saw another member with his bikes setup like this and it seems like a great idea. What is everyones thoughts?

1) Is the table safe to travel in the down position? I may put a bit of velcro at the corners to prevent it from sliding. Will it tend to scuff the sides after some miles if it's wedged between the two benches? The only other location I can see storing it is under the sofa, but I will have to rig something up so it doesn't bounce around and go out the side of it.

2) How much does the trailer bounce around inside? The table is just over the axles. I don't have much in the storage there. The bikes combined weight I would guess roughly 50-60 lbs.

I need to figure out how to secure the tires to the plywood. I have some ideas and will look around my shop tomorrow. I am picturing a strap that can use thumb screws to undo and release the tire. Same thing for the plywood. I know we have some double sided bolts, lag on one side and machine thread on the other. I can drive the lag into the bench supports and leave enough poking through the plywood to get a thumb screw on.

I am open to ideas.

Yes, the first time I saw someone mount bikes inside: Bike carrying solution....finally!

Great idea adding the wood blocks so the back tires don't "walk" while the trailer is moving.

And also, my Yeti and DeRosa do not travel outside ๐Ÿ™‚

OK, I went to town tonight after I got home from work. After trying to angle the handle bars, no matter what I did, the bikes would not stand straight up. When I tested it, they were fine. Soon as I bolted it together and put it on the clips, something was off.

I gave up and tried plan B which I think turned out better. Due to the difference in bike sizes I was able to put them side by side pretty close. I just raised my fork up an extra 3" for the cables to clear.

For the rear you guys said you don't do anything. I am taking your word that it will be fine not strapped down. But, I decided to make some wheel chocks so that it would have to bounce pretty high to move. Likely the trailer would be flipped over at that point. My GFs 26" tire was too close to the table so I shimmed it up an inch with some wood.

After getting all the brackets in place I drilled some of the lag/machine bolts into the bottom wood supports and drilled holes in the plywood. I picked up some thumb screws and wala. The boards are now secured so nothing is moving while in motion. When it comes time to unpack it all, just unbolt the thumb screws and quick releases, remove the bikes and flip the boards over.

Thanks everyone for some of the suggestions. Hopefully it holds.

I bought the bumper bracket that extends over the spare tire. It works well supported by the 4 inch bumper.

I am a Specialized dealer and I agree ๐Ÿ™‚ . My Epic and Roubaix normally ride on the master bed on top of a dirt blanket. So far I have not heard any complaints from either one of them.

Hey That was ME with that setup!

Check IT

Looks like you board and bike tight setup is set right into the seat channels, so they can't move! Looks like a safe setup.

I used another board for the back wheels to be placed on, and bungy corded them sucure to that board. Bungy corded the two bike together also. You could swing the back wheels toward the other bike and bungy them together, that way rear wheel won't bounce around, that basically what I did.

Experience some minor shifting, from what I assumed is the RIDE inside the trailer. Never enough to move them much.

At times I would store a case a water or something dense, so the rack/bikes were wedged in. Mine was on the actual cushions!!!!always had a towel or old blanket down.

Just have to be careful, when loading, and take time to secure.

Benefits of being out of weather and road grime build up with having them on back of trailer, safe & secure inside with stops, is great!

Looks good! Adapted Toy-Hauler!

PS: We have since sold our TT, still have the basic bike tight board, have used it once, on the bed aera in our C, traveling through nasty weather to a race.

Nice idea! It wasn't yours I saw, but I really like the board idea and I think I am going to do that instead. One of my concerns was the plywood being kind of flimsy. If I screw a 2x4 to it it will strengthen it quite a bit.

As for the bikes being dirty, they don't really get "dirty" because I am not riding in the mud while camping. They are more for getting around the camp sites and easy riding. If I can find some decent trails we may hit them. IF the bikes do get dirty, I can just wash them off.

GF has the specialized. I have the Gary Fisher 29er. It's a big bike, barely fits in the dinette area. The wide handle bars force it over away from the wall. I may swap ours if we decide to carry another one in the future.

Both my wife's and mine are 29'ers.

A good trick for the wide bars is the mount the bike tight at a angle, that's how I achieved having the two in the same direction, angle the mount, would lessen the width of bars side to side.

Having bikes on outside (especially behind a trailer, RV, etc..) actually is A BIG FACTOR OF A DIRTY BIKE.

** I also know investment $$$, needs & usage, and thoughts of bikes vary with many. ***

Just thought I would jump in here. I have a Jayco 23b and we haul our bikes inside.

Actually bought 2 of these Bike Stands from Menards. The bikes sit in there nice. Don't move. All I is put 1 bungee cord to wrap them together and thats it.

Then when at the campground, you take the bike stands out and park your bikes in them outside. Which helps since 3 of our bikes don't have kick stands for whatever reason. You can see that in this picture:

I have over 4000 miles with the same setup, except 4 bikes. Quick release fork mounts, and nothing on the back. I've not had any issues with the rear tires walking or anything like that.

I mounted the cleats to a 2x4, and then use couple bolts/wing nuts to secure to the plywood. Works like a champ.

FYI, you can rotate the cleats 20-30 degrees. This allows more room with four bikes.
