Black roof vent intentionally plugged

I recently picked up a used 2007 Nash TT and have noticed a strong black tank odor immediately after towing it. Today I removed the existing roof top vent to install a swivel vent and discovered the black pipe was plugged with a wad of paper towel. Any logical reason why somebody would do this? Or was somebody playing a prank on the PO?

with a 2007 it would be hard to know for sure. But typically folk plug the hole when they are working on it and do not want debris to fall in the hole.

Most likely an oversight on someone's part.
Twenty six foot 2010 Dutchmen Lite pulled with a 2011 EcoBoost F-150 4x4.

Just right for Grandpa, Grandma and the dog.

I don't think so since we don't have much for invasive creatures like mud daubers in Alberta and only one of the the three waste tanks had the vent plugged.
That being said, I guess it's possible they were all sealed and someone simply forgot to unplug one vent.

That's a very good possibility if the OP's area has as many dirt daubers as we do here.

Anything not covered or screened gets plugged by a mud nest pretty quickly.

Single empty-nester in Middle TN, sometimes with a friend or grandchild on board

Fortunately you found the problem quickly. If it continues check for a bad air admittance valve under the sink.

Try The Geo Method to clean your tank

Thanks for the response, hopefully clearing the pipe and new vent covers will eliminate the odors.

I can picture someone trying to find the source of the malodorous stench, not understanding the purpose of the vent, and having an "AHA!" moment, stuffing the rag to fix the problem. That's my take on it, anyway.

Some prank. My guess would be someone plugged it while working either on ithe vent or on the roof itself, and just forgot about it. Lucky you found it that easy.
