Buying a used 2012 F350 - what maintenance?

So I didn't do my homework two years ago when I bought my '11 F-150 EcoBoost with its 1400 lb payload and my 1000 lb tongue on my trailer.

The payload has been bugging me which has had me looking at bigger trucks. A local dealer has a 2012 F350 Lariat SRW with the 6.7 PowerStroke engine with 34,000 miles. Immaculate new condition and loaded up. 11,500 gvwr package. He's asking $45k

I think I'm going to buy it. I'm not loosing money on the trade in, in fact I have positive equity which is good.

This will be my first diesel and am wondering what maintenance would need to be done on it since it already has 34k miles?

Just wanted to update this thread....

I ended up buying the F350. It is a beautiful truck and looks brand new. Very well taken care of. Love it. 3500+ lbs of payload 🙂

No more worries about how I pack the F150!

That truck is very similar to mine. Year, color, option package. This truck gets more compliments on its looks than any other vehicle I have owned. From all sorts of people. Young kids, to old ladies, and everything in between. It is a beautiful truck. For that reason alone, it won't be on the lot for long. I agree the asking price may be a little steep. But its an ASKING price. But also, with this trucks curb appeal, they probably don't need to dicker much. They'll get a lot of serious lookers. And will sell it easily. And quickly.

Having owned my 2012, I can tell you it is a really fine truck. Tows very well and runs beautifully. Mine has 15K miles...about 8500 miles towing my 14,250 GVWR 5th wheel. Its a killer truck.

I noticed on that report that the fuel filters have not been changed. That needs to be done every 22,000 miles. So get the dealer to do that. You might also have him check the brakes. OEM pads are soft...and wear quickly. Mine are halfway gone already But I have towed a lot with it. Also only have 15,000 miles.

Its the dealers truck right now and they can treat it as they see fit.If you don't want to buy it because someone else was driving it..don't. Alot of miles for only being 9 months old. Go to KBB.com with a complete list of upgraded options that the truck has on it. Price the truck as though you were going to be trading it in and figure good condition. Since it's so new, they probably havent had the need to put alot of money into fixing stuff since it's still under warranty.

At one time, this was a pretty reliable way to figure out what a dealership had moneywise in a used car. However, since 2008 with the economy in the crapper, alot of people have been keeping their cars longer so there were less being traded in. Dealers were being forced to put alot more $$ into a trade because to have good used inventory, so the used car market has been way out of whack for the last few years.

With people starting to crack open their wallets now, the prices of the used cars should start going within the next year or so, but with the govt. threating to stop spending so much money keeping the economy propped up, I think interest rates are going to start rising as well within the next year of so.

So all this aside, the 6.7 diesel:
Needs approx 2-4 gal DEF for each oil change interval ($6/gal)
Holds 13 quarts of oil
Oil filters cost approx $15
Fuel filters cost approx $55
Air Filters cost approx $15 (way less than my previous 6.4)
20" Lariat tires run around $400 each.
Also plan on $100 x 4 to replace the stock shocks with Bilsteins.

I would question the fact that the truck was taken on vacation and agree that rentals are abused. I would also bet that their insurance carrier would have issue with it too. It is not a "Perk" it is abuse. I would bet he stuck a dealer plate on it and drove it like he stole it. One thing I always liked to do was issue citations to people that attached a dealer plate permanently to a vehicle. It is to be used to transport or move a vehicle from one location to another and can not be used to avoid paying registration and that is what many use it for. I would cite them for the expired registration on the vehicle and take the plate as evidence and if they were lucky they would get to have their vehicle parked and not stored by me.

All I have to say is that 45K is WAY too much. There are 2012 new trucks out there and ford offers 0% financing on them right now. I bought a F450 a year ago for 41K and it is LOADED! Two weeks we bought another 2012 truck thru ford finance with 0% and it was less then 45K. Go to the fleet department do not use the sales guy that meets you in the lot....

No justification for the above statement. On used cars/trucks they are "borrowed" by Management all the time at dealerships. They are not going to knock down the price too much....they know they can sell it to someone else.

It's a great "perk" when working at dealerships. He could put 500 miles on it over the weekend and not affect it's value one bit.

From my truck's point of view, being rented out for 500 miles to a new operator would likely feel like a vacation. I've tried about as hard as one could to break this truck and after nearly 3 years it still runs drives and looks like new.

The thing I think you need to recognize is that if you wait two or three months you should be able to buy a two year newer truck with zero miles equipped exactly like the one you're looking at for about $52,000.

Yeah that's true we paid right around $50K for ours new and special order, the sticker price was in the low $60's
