we decided that we do need a new tow vehicle it's just not comfortable with the one we have And towing our new unit...I have been unable to locate anywhere a used DRW 3500 Ram with 373 gears and aisin tranny...decided that we would go new but all I can find is 342 gears ....what gives if they're selling them then they must be able to tow with them...why are they frowned upon ....just talked with a dealership on the phone who said that the 342's have a 23,000 pound towing capacity in the Longhorn...25,000 with the 373 ...will,the 342 work for me...just want to get everybody else's opinion it's a big investment to make a mistake ..thanks

The truck with the 3.42`s and 6 speed will tow just like a truck with 3.73`s and 4 speed. in fact the 3.42 and 6 speed will be more efficient and the RPM drop between shifts will be less which will keep the engine in its power band.

Expand your search. Lots of 3.73 and 4.10 ram duallys out west. Maybe not in the NE. Or you could get a Chevy if you're hung up on 3.73s. Can't buy one with a different gear ratio.
we actually have been looking down south and thinking about buying and flying down and getting it but the used ones we found with low mileage and what we wanted to pay we still have the 342 so will keep searching but I'm thinking after reading some things here that the 342's would be OK now I have to start researching again local...

The more power you have the less gear you need. You will be fine.

Bingo. More gears in the transmissions means you can have lower ratios in 1st and 2nd and higher overdrive ratios in 5th and 6th. That translates to a lower ratio in the axles to mate up with the transmission.

I looked up the specs on your current trailer, fully loaded the truck you are looking at will tow that trailer easily with 3.42 gears, probably much better than your current truck.

The raisin 6 speed low gear is so low you won't know the diffferance taking off. Your MPG might be better with the 342.

The 3.42's work a lot better with your Aisin and it's lower first gear, would not want them with the 68RFE. Chris

Tell the dealer what you want and tell him to find or you'll find another dealer. Don't settle for smething less. You're in the drivers seat not him. He just wants to sell you something, he don't care If it's not what you want.
