Cold bed

We took the AF1150 out to our land in Nacogdoches this past weekend and it got down to 28 degrees. No problem for the coach, but it seemed like cold was literally seeping up from the mattress. I got an extra blanket and was still cold. Then I decided to put the extra blanket beneath us, and noticed a huge improvement.
I have the factory issued mattress with a 1 inch memory foam topper, so it's pretty comfy.
Is it possible that the cold is drawing heat out from beneath us? I figure that it's pretty thin under the bed. Any similar experiences or advice?

Foam board under the mattress and an electric mattress pad. Mostly just use the latter to take off the chill before climbing in for the night.

I picked up the interlocking foam mats that everybody seems to sell (mine were from Sam’s club):

Then I just cut to fit. Seems to have stopped the condensation as well.

I tried Reflectix and finally decided that there was virtually no improvement for any application I tried. I do have an 8 inch foam mattress that provides good insulation. Good insulation or not, the bed starts out cold. The heat does a poor job of circulating in the bed area. I have tried running a fan to move warm area over the bed. That helped a bit. The blankets have to be turned down and it takes quite a while to warm up the area and the mattress and bedding.

I recommend checking Amazon or other sources for a good, large, covered hot water bottle. The hot water bottle not only warms the bed, but the modern ones use boiling water and stay hot for many hours.

I don't like sleeping on the memory foam, so I put it under the mattress. It provides additional cushioning and insulates the mattress from the cab over floor.

Another consideration under the mattress: 1/2" Polyisocyanurate.

Probably not a standard in-stock item at Home Depot type nome centers, it might be availabbe special order... but it is becoming more common on houses- a decent contractor supply center might have it in stock. Poly-iso is a step up from the regular blue or pink rigid XPS stuff.

It is a bit spendy but we have put a Froli bed system under our mattress and it makes a world of difference in terms of comfort, especially in cold weather because air can circulate under the mattress - no condensation and no contact heat loss to the cab over. It also acts just like an innerspring mattress and improves sleeping comfort as well. It has worked very well for us.

I had some laminate flooring underlay, (thin ) laid it down then put reflex on top of that. the underlay stopped any condensation and the reflex did the insulating. Be sure to check under mattress now and see if there is moisture there and dry before going any further.

first I put down a layer of reflective foam.


Than I put down a layer of this plastic mesh designed to be used as a vapor barrier behind stucco. The idea here is air should be able to move through this layer, along with any moisture.


Than I bought a memory foam mattress off of amazon that is same thickness as factory mattress. (before I also had MF topper on factory mattress and it got in the way of cabinet opening.

This was all in my Wolf Creek, but when we bought our Arctic Fox we transferred everything into the AF, and put the brand new mattress from the AF into the Wolf Creek we were trading in. This way whom ever bought our old WC got a brand new, factory sealed Mattress 🙂

Mattress heaters work GREAT but also insulate under the mattress. The heaters draw a few amps but is thermostatically controlled.

A 2" foam topper combined with a 1/2" foam board under the mattress works well for me. If I could afford to loose the head room, I would have gone with 1" foam board.

If you do much cold weather camping, I would suggest you get the proper size space blanket and put it under the topper. This will keep the body heat from going down. Might get one to go over the blanket on top also.

Try placing a piece of reflectix under the mattress ~ have done that many years on tent trailers -TC & the motorhome. Works for us. JM2¢

Get a heating mattress pad. It's nice getting into a warm bed.
