Considering a new truck

I've been looking at a 2017 Ford F350 (gas, short bed, super cab). I've been driving an 08 Chevy 2500HD for the past eight years, but we're always careful about how much weight we take on because we're about 400 pounds over GVWR and close to max on the rear tires. But I like getting 12-13 mpg with the camper on the truck, and I'm not sure how the mileage would be with the Ford one-ton. Anyone have an idea of the mpg with a Ford F350 loaded with a 3,000 lb. camper? The one thing we prefer about the Ford is that there aren't those curved edges that the Chevy truck bed has. It looks like loading the camper might be easier with the Ford. Any input would be appreciated.

Just bought the following for 52K (plus tax/lic).....11.5K under msrp...:

2016 New Ford F350.....DRW...XLT...Crew cab, 4x4..Pretty well optioned for an XLT....Happened to be the last 16 DRW F350 on the lot and the dealer was willing to negotiate a bit.....

Now I need the camper to go on top..!

I am researching new Fords duallies for a year and most of stock I would like go >70k.
I build my cheaper one on Ford site deleting 4Wd and crew cab, as well as sunroof and Sirus, still coming to 62k.
Good part the 2016 models are listed 10k below MSRP

I am researching new Fords duallies for a year and most of stock I would like go >70k.
I build my cheaper one on Ford site deleting 4Wd and crew cab, as well as sunroof and Sirus, still coming to 62k.
Good part the 2016 models are listed 10k below MSRP

I'd second that notion you'll get more truck for the $$ other than Ford. Nothing wrong with the Ford truck, but you are going to pay more - probably for the aluminum and engineering in it. I haven't seen any real world stuff yet that leads me to believe you'll get any noticeable increase in MPG with the slightly lighter Ford. You'll probably get more payload, obviously.

His truck is NOT the same. He has a 10.5" AAM rear axle because he has a 2500 with a gas engine. ALL 3500 trucks have the larger 11.5" AAM axle regardless of engine. Also, the wheels on a 3500 are wider to better handle the larger tires.

One thing is trucks change over years. My 2004 SRW 3500 Ram had a GVWR of 9,900#. The same configured truck in 2015 has a GVWR of 12,300. My gasser version is only 11,300 which is reduced by 1,000# for the lighter engine and drivetrain. So just moving up in years, I gained ~1,800# of payload (GVWR difference plus weight difference).

I would not make broad statement that 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are the same trucks with heavier springs.
When that might be true on some models, other models come with different differentials, weaker wheels, no sway bars and who knows what else.
Our 12 years old car has aluminium fenders and hood. Even it spend bigger part of its life in NY - there is no corrosion on it.
But the antennas are either printed on side glass, or Sirus/GPS antenna is just 1" tall

Ya there's about 1000 mpg threads on here, but I'll play.
If you're getting 12-13 with your diesel, I'd expect 8.5-10 with the 6.2 gasser.
Have had 2 of them ford 6.2s now and empty (800lbs or so in the bed) mpg was 12-13.5. Loading the bed and pulling a smallish trailer was around 9.
Comparing similar loads with my diesel vs most gas engines is about a 4 mpg penalty.

Oh and don't get sucked into the gvw game. Your 2500 chebbie is the same truck as a 3500 minus some spring capacity. And tires have nothing to do with it. You can buy heavier tires, unless that's the justification for a new truck.

2017 has the same drivetrain what 2016 does, so economy is going be the same, or at least slightly less weight will not be noticeable at the pump.
