cruise control kicking out

Truck is as shown in signature...

Pulling back home from California this week (trailer on), just today the truck kicked out of cruise control three times...I've had this happen in previous trucks, but only in hills where the cruise control apparently became (for lack of a better term) overwhelmed...the three times today were in flat country, with it set right at 65

Is this a matter of concern? Dealer work?

I'd appreciate thoughts

That was indeed a problem with them some years ago. The switches weren't adjusted right (which required replacement) and going over a bump would cause it to activate the brake lights and kill the cruise.

OTOH, I would suggest that if your truck is working very hard, like bucking a head wind, that you don't use CC. I think it's better to slow down a bit rather than cruise at WOT.

Every cruise control I’ve had will “drop out” of cruise if the speed falls more than X number of mph below the set speed. It seems like you would WANT it to work that way. If the vehicle is unable to maintain the set cruise speed within a reasonable tolerance, maybe something is wrong and the driver should take over.

On my newer trucks, they will even drop out of cruise if I hit one of those potholes from heck that jar your teeth out. I try to avoid those of course, but sometimes...........

There is a recall to have the PCM reprogrammed for the cruise control. but that is for failure to deactivate. sometimes the cruise wont stay engaged if throttle position stays above a certain percentage.

Are you using the transmission's tow/haul mode? Was the transmission shifting a every minute or 2?

I personally do not use cruise control when towing my TT. I like to let the speed fall a bit when going up slight hills and increase when going down - as much as traffic allows.

I had the same problem with my 2009 Ram 3500 and the problem was fixed by replacing the "clock spring" in the steering wheel.
