Just as a heads up for those that may be looking at buying here. Picked up our truck recently and they have a $299 document fee that I was told about but they also added a $299.50 theft protection fee which is nothing more than VIN etching. I was not aware of that until I saw the paperwork to be signed. There was also a snafu on the out of state sales tax they tried to collect which was several thousand more than what my state requires. They tried to tell me that the state will reimburse me(yeah right). I made them change it to the correct amount. We did save several thousands more than any other quote I had gotten, and am happy about that, but you do need to read all the papers they quickly slide in front of you and not just blindly sign them.
Also there were a few things that the accessories manager wanted to sell me and a few of these things I might of been interested in purchasing there but I told him that since they pulled a fast one with the VIN etching fee that I would not be buying anything extra.

I always buy the VIN etching and also nitrogen in my tires was only eighty dollars and I paid extra to get bottled air from Death Valley as it is denser and ya get more for your buck . Lots of bargains out there for us smart guys . The dealer even sent my financial records to some Prince in Nigeria to see if we could get a better deal on the financials , ain't heard back yet !

Googling Dennis Dillon, I see a Dennis Dillon Dodge in Idaho. Do you live in SC and go to Idaho to get a good deal?

I don't think I've ever bought from a dealership without having to deal with some of this kind of stuff - security etching, free key replacement program, upholstery protection/repair program, gap insurance, etc. They all do it.

"World Famous Dennis Dillon" as I call him. He moved into Yuma, AZ. a couple of years peddling RVs. Lasted two snowbird seasons as an itinerate dealer. Packed it in and never did come back.

Yep going to an out of town/state dealer and then finding out they were trying to pull a fast one, would make me find a good local dealer. Then what if you need to take it in for warranty work. Are they going to give you a car to drive or make you wait for the work while their loyal customers take priority? That deal may not turn out to be such a great deal after all.

That's easy to say. Try living in a town that's a one horse town. The dealers here think all their trailers have a pot of gold in them.
I've tried to deal with two of them and they think they have the last unit on earth. There's only 3 RV dealers where I live. One is rather small, the other two are midsize. Not the best of selections for brands.
I bought my last 5th wheel 300 miles away. I've only had one minor warranty repair needed. Of course some may of taken it in for some of the little things that needed worked on. That's fine. But the MFG found an independent shop in my town to fix the water leak.

Just me, but the last thing I'll do is drop $1000s on the table just so I can support the local dealer. They all seem to be doing fine as they've been gouging people for years.

As it stands right now the units that we're considering aren't in the town where I live.

Sometimes you have to get outside the box.

That's a real shame to have to deal with the last minute surprises. That's when I would walk!

I suppose that one of the regulars here who recommend this dealer missed the details at their final signing.

Toyota dealer in Maine tried to charge me for the VIN etching on a USED van, I stood up, told him to take that fee off or I was walking, they did. Why the hell would I pay for VIN etching that the original owner already paid for?

I purchased a fifth wheel about 15 years ago and as I was reading over the contract I noticed that they had added the cost of my trade-in to the purchase price of the RV instead of subtracting it. That got me to go back through and take a detailed look at the contract. We found over $6000 in "errors" and they were all in favor of the dealer. We got up and walked out. The dealer called us back the next day and said that they had fixed the errors and we ended up buying the FW. They went out of business about a year later.

I'd be interested to know what you bought and the Price "Range" without giving away too much personal info.

As for the states refunding the additional. Every state that I have had dealings with on this issue did refund any extra the dealer collected.

I just bought a new Dodge from a small dealer in Southern Oregon and they called the SD DMV to get the actual taxes and fees.

Please follow up with more details if you feel so inclined.

There is a Legal precedent called "Informed Consent" and yes he was informed, however this was not what I would call Ethical behaviour.

I'm surprised about the tax. Pretty easy to figure your tax rate and simple multiplication to get the amount.
Sounds like a South African E Bay deal where they refund the excess tax.

They said they go by a sales tax web site and that told them to collect 7%. My state sales tax is 5% or $300 which ever is lower. So in my case it was $300. They had no problem refiguring it once I brought it to their attention. But with all the out of state deals they do there, I would of thought they would have had the correct information. They may of been correct about the state issuing a refund but I'm not convinced any gov't entity willingly and quickly refunds overpayments.

The theft protection seems to be common.
Same deal when I bought my Jeep from a local dealer. It wasn't printed anywhere but the final contract and wasn't mentioned.
I told the finance lady I didn't want it and wasn't going to pay the $299. It's funny that she got a sad look on her face and said they all come with it.
After sticking to my guns she asked if I would at least use their financing since they would make some $ off that.
As they beat my credit union by 1/4% I financed with them.
You definatley have to read the fine print.
That's why I like to deal over the phone and get an OTD price before going in.
On my Ram, Dillion would have beat my local dealer but not enough for me to take 2 days off work and fly up and drive it home.
