Do diesels make financial sense?

I know that most will say they buy a diesel for the towing performance, and, having owned both, I agree, diesels tow better. But, if one just looks at the $ side of things, gassers make more sense.

I'd buy another 6.4L Hemi powered Ram 2500 in a second if I had the chance.

Can a Ram 2500 6.4L owner here tell me how much an oil change is if you do it yourself? Also, is the oil change interval still 8k? Doing the numbers myself. As I said before, I don't trust Vicentric, and there is a reason my company dropped their subscription for our fleet data.

Could someone point me to the brand, model and options needed for a new gasser to tow our 16K 39'4" Bighorn 5th wheel in the West coast mountainous routes? I would like to get rid of my stinky, noisy, overly expensive and ruff riding HD diesel RAM 3500. Desire is something that rides more car like with a quiet motor.

to me financial sense for vehicles I drive is near the very bottom of the criteria list. Decades ago gas engines weren't up to the job for heavy towing, today with the right choice give a good alternative to a diesel for towing. Pick which you want.

We've gone with diesels on both our trucks, I'd do it again, could care less about the financial aspects, it's which we like the most.

And in fact for us there are few decisions where financial sense is the deciding factor. In some it's more important than others, but generally for us it not much of a deciding factor.

Never heard anyone suggest the diesel is cheaper to operate, only that the difference in price isn't substantial.

I think it's less about the engine type and more about the transmission. The torque is nice, but revving up the gasser RPMs in a low gear does a lot of the same thing unless we are racing up a mountain in a 70MPH zone.

Diesel costs more, diesel repairs cost more, diesel trucks cost more. Extra mileage you can put on a diesel is debatable given just about everything else will fail around the engine core.

Diesel trucks are much nicer than their HD gas equivalents, towing or not. Even if there's a premium to pay it's worth it to me, although I still think it's a wash relative to what you'll spend on either type of truck from a total cost of ownership standpoint.
