Here's a video on a EGR failure on a 6.7 PSD. I'm surprised of the idle hours this guy is reporting.

Don't know about the wrecker market, but I see GM taking most of Ford's previous market share for ambulance chassis. When Ford stopped offering a diesel in an E450, the only thing left in that class is the GM 4500 Express cutaway with the Duramax diesel. The Ram 4500/5500 or Ford 450/550 are options, but those chassis are 2 feet longer for the same cab-axle length, and cost several thousand dollars more. You see Sprinters being used more, but for my department they are too light duty for the extra equipment we carry on top of basic ambulance stuff.

BTW... I can understand your post full of angst since RAM owns 8% of this market and Ford owns 68% of this market.

"Ignorance is a bliss" so true and that statement is proven every time someone buys a Ford. What was that recall "We Own Work" had for their great Ambulance Units. How many stopped dead on the side of the road in route to a hospital with a patient in the back? Yep they "Own" something alright but I'm not sure it's work there Troy> :W:W:W:W:W:W:W

Never say never. The local government run ambulance service in our locale operates on a service model called System StatusNot sure why any city or EMS/Ambulance service would run like that but I don't think they are the norm. But with how this Country is heading it might become the norm. Management. The short explanation is the units are always on the road, either handling calls, moving around the county to plug coverage gaps, or idling in 7-11 parking lots ( I see it everyday). No stations, no sleeping crews, they don't work 24 shifts.

As an aside, they are replacing their F-450 based rigs with Ram 4500 based units.
Say it's not so! Yep seeing them a lot around here also. Ford still is on top but not for long.

Guys, I have trucks with way more hours per miles on them than that. BTW, the hour meter on a 2005 F350 will not go past 9999.:W

In the real world of the truck being used as a tool and not just transportation you will rack up a lot of idle time per miles. I have one truck (5.9 Cummins) that has averaged 25 mph during it's life. The problem with the engine in the video is that it doesn't get blown out near enough because of it's location I would say. Running around in the city limits it's whole life.

Makes me wonder though. I mean that was an extraordinarily high amount of hours idling on that engine. Not good for any engine, gas or diesel.

Some things just never change. $55k truck, couldn't have been more than 3 years old.

Yeah, I don't know how many miles and how it was maintained, but it looked all clean and sparkly and the guys wife and kids were standing by the side of the road. The jet ski's looked all nice and shiny.

Totally pathetic sight. Some things just don't change.

I don't know, Powerdude, your detailed observation does not line up with Fish's observation, and he is always right. Maybe you just imagined the shiny crew cab Superduty with the shiny jet skis on the side of the road.

Even at a multiple vehicle crash scene with multiple extrications and or waiting for the Coroner unit to show up your looking at 4 hours tops. All these units have the ability to idle up when sitting for extended periods. At a scene the units at least ALL I have been involved with and seen for that matter stay running until they arrive at the hospital or back at the station.

If the Ford can't handle extended idle time, then Ford should stop supplying units for EMS/Ambulance use IMO.
