Well at least you asked. Many would have added bags and 19.5's and would have been good to go until .........:S

What is the available payload for your truck and what is the weight pin weight of your 5er?

To answer your question though, there is nothing you can do to change your GVWR. Air bags will upgrade the suspension portion, but you still have to worry about braking, axle weights, tire weights, etc etc.

Wrong. You cannot change the CGWR for a vehicle as that number reflects the capabilities of the engine, drivetrain, suspension, frame, brakes, wheels, etc.

But the rear axle weight rating is based on the leaf springs and rims and tires that were put on by the factory. One can add leaf springs and go with higher rated tires, like 19.5's for example, and change the safe load capacity of the rear axle.

The factory does this in part by taking the same axle and wheel bearings and adding two more wheels and increasing the rear payload amount by 50%. No other changes to a 3500HD truck than one being SRW and the other DRW and the load values change. Go to a dealer lot and look at the trucks with the fancy chrome tires and see what it did to the payload rating. Same with low profile tires.

My 2500HD truck has an axle rated 200 lbs. higher than the same truck as a 3500HD and all that is different is the leaf springs installed at the factory.

Lots of ways to increase or decrease (lift the truck, put on oversize tires, etc.) payload capacity and at the same time affect handling and safety for the better or the worse.

We had a 2002 F350 crew cab DRW and the GCWR was 20,000#. No way that truck can pull a 18,000# trailer and the truck will be over 8000# by itself.

Compare to this, my 01 7.3 (Super Cab, DRW and camper package) with a 50hp and 100lb programmer tows 13k with nearly 3k of pin weight. I am over rated GCWR and would not attempt any more trailer weight.

With the trailer weight you are giving I'd look at a MDT or maybe a new 1ton with HD towing.

A GVWR of 11,200# I suspect you have the 4x4 version.

18,100# x 20% = 3620# pin. It will be a little lower is the trailer is not loaded to gross.

The real issue you may have is lack of power! If stock that 7.3 will be lacking the HP and torque to move that big of load.

A 5er does not need 20% pin weight. A F350 already has a extra helper spring and assuming your TH axles and tires are rated high enough makes sure you have plenty of weight in the rear then go weigh your axles. Your 99 7.3 needs a chip to get more HP but you need an upgraded tranny and a extra cooler on it if it's an auto.

I think your gcwr is only 18500 so the trailer itself is that much. You will be over weight by around 8k if you have the crew cab drw 4x4.

You may be over estimating your pin weight.

Average pin weight percentage runs in the low 20's. If you've got 7000 lbs of pin weight, that's 38 percent of your trailer's GVWR. At 25 percent, your pin weight would be around 4500 lbs. At 22 percent, it would be around 4000 lbs.

You should visit a CAT scale and get some accurate weights, with and without the trailer.

Check the GVWR on the truck, weigh it, and see what you've got for payload.

Air bags or supersprings, may improve the ride and stability, nothing will increase the ratings.

You really can't change the GVWR with springs or bags. You only change the ride height under load.

How much does your truck lack in GVWR for carrying the pin weight plus cargo/passengers?
