F350 with new motor

I posted a thread just under a week ago asking some questions about purchasing a F350 w/ 6.7 diesel. It turned out that was a good deal and someone scooped it before I even had a chance to see it. So I have my dealer looking around for others. He called me with an interesting option and I was looking for pros and cons. He has found an 2011 F350 Lariat/FX4. It had engine issues. They are offering to pick it up, replace the motor with a brand new 2016 6.7 and then sell it to me. It would come with their standard 90 day used vehicle warranty but the motor since brand new would have 2 yr, unlimited mileage full warranty. Just looking for thoughts on whether this is a good option if the price is right (which it is) and if there are pros and cons folks can think of. Also, are there items that I should ask that they replace at the same time as the motor since I would expect I would not have to pay labour since they are already ripping into it.

Thanks

Nothing wrong with new or used replacement motors. I put a used one with 55k miles on it from a wrecked Mountaineer in my 2006 Explorer that had 200k on the original motor. It was a Saturday job with a friend. Motor runs like a champ a year later. It turned out that the old motor was good, so I still have it in my garage, the torque converter was bad but 2 shops diagnosed it as a bad motor .....
So I pulled the motor again to change the TQ. Luckily, with the gas motors, the price was "change" compered to the diesels, $1600 for a complete motor with intake.
So yeah, while it's nice to have original stuff in the car, replacements work 🙂

Eh...perhaps it's just me, but I like my vehicles with the original engine. perhaps I'm still just pissed about the cross threaded oil pan drain bolt on my truck, from the last time I had the dealer change the oil. Great reminder of why I do my own mechanic and maintenance work. Luckily I drive a Ford so it's pretty much just oil changes and drive it.

I would get the front end rebuilt while they have the truck all tore down. New ball joints, tie rods, pitman arm, the works. You're going to need it in a year or so anyways. They may even throw in the labor in the deal if you buy the parts.

Thanks for this. I have a call this morning with the service manager to talk about things that I should do now to save on labour costs. I will be sure to ask about these in specific.

Ask yourself, why does a 5 year old truck need a new motor? its one thing if it was yours and you know why, its another to buy something you have no idea why it needs what it needs! especially a newer diesel. the 6.7 had fuel system issues that could`ve prompted the replacement so it may need more than just the motor! Out of all the new diesels I would pass on any 6.? Powerstroke! And despite my screen name I`m a diehard Ford guy.

Keep looking!

Edit: I didn't see your last post till after I posted. I used to work at a dealer and I heard stories like that before, that smells of made up salesman BS. I would still pass!

A bit more info just in case people are interested.

The old motor had the issue where a glowplug broke which resulted in 'catastrophic engine failure'. I think there may have been extended warranty to cover the engine (but not sure here)

They decided (not sure why, maybe because it was warranty??) that it would be best if they put the long block in including fuel system and new turbo.
The motor is brand new, not reman or rebuild. It does include the new better valves, the new better glowplugs, and a new gt37 turbo.
It is a brand new and direct from Ford. It has been delivered, I have seen it.
The original truck was purchased at, and had all service done at my local ford dealer. They have provided me with Oasis report, and screen shots from their system of all work orders done on truck. Nothing concerning in the list at all (excluding an engine blowing up of course).

They have been really good with all my questions. I got them down a tiny bit on price ($500) but they said since they went with the full motor they do not really have any wiggle room. Its the truck I have been waiting patiently for, and the price is right, so I think I will call them today and tell them its sold.

Thanks for all the help. I felt more informed after the posts here and the powerstroke forum I am a member of.

If it has a new motor and the work was done by a reputable Ford shop with a good price tag I wouldn't have a problem buying the truck.

I wouldn't touch this deal with a 10 foot pole; but that's me.

Here is what I would do if I were you:

#1. Ask if this "new" engine comes with the updated valves that don't fall off into the combustion chamber.

#2. Ask if this "new" engine comes with updated glowplugs that don't fall off into the combustion chamber.

#3. Ask if this "new" engine comes with the 15+ single wheel turbo or if it comes with the fly apart 14 down turbo.

#4. Ask what happen to the old motor.

Get everything in writing. And I do mean everything! Pull an Oasis report and see what other things happened to that truck.

Good luck.

Ford offers a brand new "enhanced" long block. This is what is put in when they have valve failures. The injectors and high pressure fuel pump along with the turbocharger and intakes have to be transferred over. They do have a complete available but it is a reman. It comes with intake and turbos and fuel system components installed. Reman still has a warranty though. I would be more comfortable with all new fuel system you never know how it was treated and today's fuel systems are so sensitive. There is also new short blocks available as well but I have not gotten but one of those.
