First Tow with EcoBoost

We had our first camping trip of the season and my first tow with the Ecoboost. I was pretty impressed with the power. My previous truck was an F350 Diesel and the Boost definitely could hold its own with the big truck. Acceleration/power and fuel economy were about the same, but I did notice a difference in ride stability. There was a little more sway/movement with the F150, but I never felt out of control. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the switch...especially since the truck is my daily driver too.

Several of neighbors have Ecoboost trucks and love them. I wish I had one but they are out of my price range for a few more year. Plus, the truck I have has a few good years in it yet.

The old truck was 2010 F350 with the 6.4L. Well, maybe it had more power and acceleration, but the ecoboost still had no problems getting up to speed in a hurry. I actually had to make sure that I hit the cruise control because I caught myself doing 120km/h a couple times with even noticing.

The F350 a great truck...I just got sick of dealing with diesel particulate filter. Other than the summer months, I only made short daily trips with it, so the DPF was more work than it was worth to me. I was a little apprehensive at first about making the switch (thinking it would be a serious downgrade in performance), but I am really glad I did.

I've heard of people on here with the diesel particulate filter problem. Maybe it was you?? My brother has a F250 the diesel truck and never has a problem with that. There was a problem with some of them that needed a reflash of the computer. We have recently leaned also that they are really, really, sensitive to using the right type of engine oil. You Must Use a CJ type oil. If you don't it screws everything up and the computer is always trying to clean the particulate filter. Even a single quart of the wrong type of oil will cause big headaches. Our new tractors are all Tier 4 type engines and we have to be really careful with oil for them too.

Did someone maybe put the wrong type of oil in your diesel engine??

Come on, the Ecoboost certainly doesn't have >800lb-ft like the diesels in the 250/2500s. It's an apples and oranges comparison.

But you don't need that for many trailers. I pull 7500# and the truck is loaded to the max (7500#) so totalling about 15,000# GCW. Absolutely no problem pulling. Been all over, the Rockies, the Appalachians. Strong winds in Saskatchewan. The engine does the job.

My limitations right now are more to do with tongue weight, Rear GAWR and Payload. This has nothing to do with what the EcoBoost can pull. It's about the rest of the F150. Getting the F150 HD payload option would raise many of these limits. As would getting a 250/2500.

The only other engine issue is Engine Braking. The Ecoboost doesn't have that much. It's only a 3.5L V6. And the tranny only has 6 gears. So it can get you up that steep hill, but coming down may not be as easy. I, for one, would appreciate another gear between first and second.

Exactly what I was thinking. My 2013 Ram Cummins will pull circles around the Ecoboost. The Ecoboost is a good truck for what it is made for but comparing it to todays torque monsters it is not even close in power.

Well, it depends what you are towing. Is anyone suggesting it would tow 12k as well? Nope. But a lighter trailer, say, my 6000# unit? Yes, pretty close. Kinda like the right hammer will pound a nail just as well as an oversized one.

I've towed the same TT w/ my 2500HD Duramax and my Ecoboost. I have been very impressed with how the EB moved the load along.

What are you pulling? I have an ecoboost too and was wondering the size trailer you are pulling. I am in the market for a new TT and will be pulling it far and wide. Thanks

Sorry diesel guys...I didn't post this to start a flame war. I was merely stating that I was very impressed with the EB, especially being a former diesel owner.

Didn't the ecoboost have the top spot in the TFL Truck 0-60 boat tow test until just recently? The latest diesels barely beat it, by about a 1/2 second out of 15 seconds total. It's going to take you a long time to make just one circle around it.

Glad it's doing the job for you! With my little trailer, I can run through the mountains with NO stress at all. We're going to upgrade trailers somewhere right between our current trailer and yours.

I have the gvwr package. It adds 700lbs of payload above a stock F150. I was actually shocked at how little the truck squatted after hitching up.

Yeh, but your axles are the same as some other trucks with only a 7200 lbs GVWR.

Standard axles on Crew Cab 4WD short bed truck are Front = 3750 lbs, Rear = 3850 lbs.

Standard axles on Crew Cab 4WD standard bed truck are Front = 3900 lbs, Rear = 3850 lbs.

20" wheels will bring the 4050 lbs Rear Axle. Heavy options will bring the 3900 lbs Front axle on short bed trucks.

If it's an Ecoboost Crew Cab 4WD with short bed, it will have a 7200 lbs GVWR. If it's a 5.0L it will have a 7350 lbs.

If it's an Ecoboost Crew Cab 4WD with standand bed, it will have a 7350 lbs GVWR. If it's a 5.0L it will have 7350 lbs as well.

Max Tow package only adds a 4050 lbs axle over the standard 3850 lbs axle. Max Tow package components weigh 75 lbs. You net only 125 lbs!! Yet Ford boosts the GVWR up by 450 lbs (7650 lbs with short bed or 7700 lbs with standard bed). The added payload is artificial but will help with a legal claim should you need it.

HEAVY DUTY SUSPENSION PACKAGE on Ecoboost or 5.0L Crew Cab standard bed truck: Front axle = 4050 lbs, Rear axle = 4800 lbs, GVWR = 8200 lbs.

If you want payload get the Heavy Duty Suspension Package otherwise you'll run out of axle capacity way before you run out of tow capacity with standard Tow and Max Tow packages.
