Good bye Shell Rotella

Unless I'm missing something...After using Shell Rotella oil's since the early 80's I just returned a case of Rotella of T-6 full synthetic for a case of Motorcraft oil for my 6.7 Powerstroke. Seems everything I could find said DO NOT put any oil in your 6.7 that Ford has not approved and Shell CK-4 T-6 isn't approved by them. These new Super Duty's cost way to much for me to think I know more than they do so I'm switching oil after 40 years of using Rotella oils.

Getting on the Ford list not really testing based. What Ford does is ask for the formula from all potential oil manufacturers. Ford checks for certain levels of anti wear additives (amongst other things) and if the oil has enough, it goes on the list. They are not actually doing long term tests on one of their engines with each oil.

There are two different T6 oils now, a multi-vehicle 5-30 and the 5-40 for diesel. I have seen T6 in a new jug with the word Diesel in big letters, but that may be just a short time thing.
I will wait a while till the current supply is flushed from the system before buying T6. Maybe the Ford specification will be printed on the label in the future.

I wonder what is different with T-6 now that it meets Fords oil spec's ?

Nothing.... It just took time for Shell to run the tests to qualify it. Looking at a Virgin Oil Analysis of the CK4 T6 it was clear it would pass.

Well, I guess this thread is a mute point. It appears that T4,T5, and T6 Rotella is now on the approved list. Seems like a bit of a panic over nothing. OP probably wondering why he returned a case of T6.

My '04.5 Cummins has been on Shell Rotella T-6 for over 160K ago and is changed twice a year. Has not used, smelled or what ever even under heavy towing up to 400 miles a day. Maybe my engine is an oldy but goody.

Yep, Rotella T6 was good oil, but that changed about 10 months ago. Continued use would not be wise.
And exactly how was it changed and why should I change my ways? And what exact damage am I doing to my 13 1/2 year old truck? Please advise.

IMHO not a thing. I would continue to use it and be happy. Cummins has not issued any such warnings about this.

Unbelievable, do whatever you want and be sure that you never read anything about the reduction in anti-wear additives. :R

I'm not too worried. Honestly this is one of the reasons I left Ford after over 20 years of owning their trucks. Not having to worry about what specific oil to use, coolant additives, etc. is very nice.

Unfortunately it's across the board. There is a specific Mopar spec oil i have to run in my 6.4 hemi. I don't remember the spec, but pennsoil ultra platinum is one of the few that meets it. It's a joke

Which viscosity does Ford want you to use. I had a hell of a time getting used to 5w-20 in the F250 gasser. AT 96k miles it's still running like a new one. I run 20w-50 in my old Harley. Times are changing.

From my owners manual:
For severe duty usage, use SAE 5W-40 API CJ-4

Since I tow and run in very low temperatures, this is the only weight that meets the Ford requirements.

I would use only the oils on this chart for any brand of diesel.
