I am in the market for a new tt. I currently have a Jayco Jay Feather 242. I am very happy with Jaycos product. I have had vitually no problems with the unit in the 6 years I have owned it. I am looking for a larger unit now. A couples unit that is half ton towable. Although I like jaycos product they do not seem to have a couple unit, rl or re, in the half ton towable segment.

I have been looking for a new unit for 2 years and believe I have finally found a unit we would he happy with. The Grand Design Imagine 2950rl fits all my needs, weighs less than 7000lbs and appears to be well designed and built. The only thing that makes me a little nervous is the age of the Grand Design Company. They have only been in business for around 4 years. Being a young company it is virtually impossible to find reviews on their products.

Does anyone have any experience with their products or customer service?
Any input is appreciated.

Besides the GD owners forum there's a GD Imagine Facebook page but you need to register for it.
We like our GD 2650RK but the dealer's service leaves a lot to be desired. I may find out how good GD's customer service is at getting involved.

I recently saw the 2950 at the Calgary RV show. It was my favourite TT at the show. However since I tow a lot in the mountains, I would move up to a 3/4 ton truck. It's a lot of trailer for a 1/2 ton at high elevations and mountain passes in my opinion.

I've also jumped from Jayco and am waiting to pick up my Grand Design next month. Grand Design was sold to Winnebago a little while ago. They are being operated as a separate company, with almost all of the original staff in place at their home location. Reviews of their customer service continue to be stellar. They do now have a greater depth of financial resources, and purchasing power in the ability to obtain all the various components in an RV.

You could not pick a finer company to do business with than Grand Design. When I requested a download of a Reflection brochure( which I got), several days later I received an envelope with a nice brochure from the director of Marketing at Grand Design. A month later, I received a follow-up e-mail from him, asking if the brochure he sent had helped up make our decision. 2 weeks later when we ordered a new 315RLTS from our local GD dealer, I e-mailed him with the news. He answered (the next morning, by the way) that he was glad of our choice and welcoming us to the Grand Design family. He also included his office and personal cell numbers if we ever had a problem.

I dare say that no other company's management team would give this level of personal attention to prospective customers. Grand Design will definitely have us as a repeat customer.

How does the F-150 tow the 2950? I am thinking about doing the same setup. I work on the road and every month or two I would be towing about 10+ hours and want to make sure it won't be awful!

I've been checking door jambs on the f150s with the 7000lb package. XLTs are about 1900 payload, Lariats without a sunroof about 1750lbs payload.

Also, those payloads already take into account a full tank of gas (36 gallons on some of them), so you can subtract out your 200lbs for gas.

You should be within your limits and obviously could move some of the random "250lbs" to the trailer. IMO any setup should be weighed. Ideally when brand new and empty, and then again when loaded so you have an idea of how the loading affects the tounge weight.

Even better when the tanks are new and can be dumped anywhere, fill each up varying amounts and see how each tank affect the tongue weight. If a 1/4 full black tank removes 40 lbs from the tounge, you know that would offset about 50 lbs of firewood in the front storage compartment just as an example. A consistent tounge weight will work best with your WD hitch dialed in. A battery and full propane alone will add about 120 lbs to the tounge before loading anything in the garage or bedroom.

You do not have the Max Payload package. They were basically not made in 2015. With a 7000# Gross you could only have the Max Tow. Also the Curb Weight is most likely w/o options. Check your yellow tag on the door jamb to get a good representation of what your payload actually is. Good Luck.

My profile has not been updated but I have purchased a new truck. 2015 F150 Supercrew, 4x4, 3.5 ecoboost, 3:55, max payload package. I also will be using the Equalizer 4 point weight distribution system.
I have posted the weights and maximums for my tow vehicle and new trailer. To the best of my knowledge all the numbers are correct.

GVWR: 7000 lbs.
Max Cargo: 2060 lbs.

Loaded Tongue Weight: 950 lbs.

I feel like this is a safe combination. Opinions?

JMO but I think you'll be fine. The newer F150s have more payload than most 1/2 tons.
However is the 2060lb payload from the brochure or the door jamb?

For reasons already posted above, I'm looking closely at the Imagine 2650 and 2150. The 2650 is not too long or heavy yet offers lots of storage and a large living area with nice views. I would probably be happy with the 2150. It's only drawback is the slide must be open to access the bedroom. Then there's the Open Road Ultra Lights. A couple well thought out floor plans there too. Decisions, decisions.

Numbers to consider. My F-150 4x4 has a towing capacity of 9500 lbs, a max cargo on the door jamb of 1411 lbs.

My Dutchmen Lite is advertised at 5004 lbs and 460 lbs tongue weight. Across the CAT scales loaded for the road it weighs 6400 lbs and has almost 700 lbs on the tongue.

So in the real-world my F-150 sees 700 lbs of tongue weight, 600 lbs for two adults and a dog, add another 100lbs or so for the cap and camp gear putting me at or a bit over the max cargo limit.

Now run your figure starting with a 7000 lb TT.
Twenty six foot 2010 Dutchmen Lite pulled with a 2011 EcoBoost F-150 4x4.

Just right for Grandpa, Grandma and the dog.

I have had my Grand Design 5th wheel for 2 plus years. This company is Awesome. Their Customer service is excellent even after the 1 year warranty. I would buy another one for sure!

That seems like a lot of trailer for a half ton. You may be way ahead of me on this, but just in case.....don't make the same very costly mistake that I did. That is, to believe the towing/payload capacities claimed by the truck manufacturers. They are as inflated as gas mileage claims, in my opinion.
My truck's GVWR is 6900 lbs. Dry weight is 6000 pounds, leaving just 900 lbs for passengers, gear, AND tongue weight. With a tongue weight for my TT at 1,000 lbs (weighed by me), you can see that my half ton is way overloaded. Also, the supposed 10,000 lbs of towing capacity greatly exceeds what the Trailer Life Towing Guide lists for my truck (7900 lbs). I believe the latter, based on my experiences. Lastly, the weight of the trailer as advertised is the DRY weight, and does not include gear, food, water, and upgrades (spare tire, slide out covers, ladder etc.). You'll need to include that weight when comparing it to your truck's towing capacity. My advice...1) weigh your truck on a scale, compare it to the allowed GVWR, and see how much you have left over for tongue weight. 2) Check the Trailer Life Towing Guide to see what it says about your towing vehicle's capacity.

We just bought a 2017 Imagine 2800BH. It is a very nice unit, and GD is selling a lot of them.

I considered the 2950 and looked at them very closely. The only downside with the double slides is that you cannot get into the galley.

The 2950 comes with a huge pantry so that is very nice as well.

I think the biggest negatives I have are the lack of 12 volt outlets, small gas bottles, the lack of HDMI from the entertainment center, and the rather thin mattresses.

I have not read many negative comments about these trailers and have only found one or two that had some serious complaints. My two problems are minor: one drawer not having a lock installed; the TV antenna dripping water, but it took a Louisiana deluge while driving 65 MPH to reveal it...not repeatable when stopped!

It makes one heck of a mancave.
