Hitch Mount Cargo on TT??

TysonTDW

I have a bolt mount receiver attached to the back of my TT (pictured below) and previously used it for a hitch mount bike rack. I now plan to use it with my heavier hitch mount cargo carrier (Pictured Below). Plan to stack up more weight with cooler, fire wood, etc. My TT is a 2012 rockwood and the rear bumper is welded to the frame.

Does anyone use this type of set up?
Should I be concerned with support?
Do I "need" to the get a receiver that welds to the bumper?
Do I "need" to have the bumper reinforced?

Thanks

Very nice mod. That looks like it will do the job. Nice looking, too.

Thanks for all the replies. Better safe then sorry. I have the job scheduled with my local custom hitch shop.

What are you intending to have them do?

They are removing the existing bumper and replacing it with a thicker steal, stronger welds, built in reciever. He is then re attaching the origonal bumper below to store the sewer hose. Estimated at $350. Should be done today. Post picts later.

Some people just insist on picking nits about other peoples posts. Nothing better to do I guess.

In Oregon you aren't even supposed to take firewood from one spot to another. Only use what is local. We have some nasty beetles that have destroyed some really nice CG's.

Don't assume that the frame rails are strong enough. Also, when adding weight to the back, make sure you still have enough tongue weight for the trailer to handle properly.

We had a 2007 Jayco Eagle 322FKS trailer and hauled two bikes all over the States for years with the same set-up you illustrated.. Then got a Keystone 2014 Cougar High Country 321RES trailer and did the same thing.
Check out the bumper if it's good steel and welded properly.
I took mine to a welding shop and they said it's good to go.

I previously owned a 2012 Rockwood TT. The rear bumper is light weight, but it is NOT aluminum as someone mentioned. It is steel. I can say that definitively, because I welded steel to my rear bumper.

One of my co-workers just got back from a long trip. New bumper mount hitch like that with 4 bikes on it. While getting fuel he did a walk-around and noticed the weld broke on one side of his bumper. He narrowly avoided a bad situation.

My understanding is that if you do ANY mods to the frame if voids the warranty. The bumper mount idea has been discussed ad nauseum and the majority felt you do it at your own risk...see above picture. Suggest you come up with Plan B.
