Assuming that's EXACTLY what happened to you, that is, you picked up your brand new trailer, the dealer hooked it up, and it flew off the ball on the way home, I'd say it's their fault for not checking for true hitch.

Nope. Not even close.

Pretty much a standard with each state that the OPERATOR of the vehicle IS RESPONSIBLE to ensure their load is correctly tied down or in the case of a trailer correctly coupled.

I guarantee if you have ANYTHING come off your vehicle in PA and it causes property damage or causes other motorists to cause accidents the OPERATOR OF THE VEHICLE which lost the load IS RESPONSIBLE.

Years ago, near Pittsburgh PA an ENTIRE FAMILY WAS KILLED when an improperly connected 3,000 lbs chipper broke loose from the truck that was towing it and completely smashed the mini van the family was in.

FAMILY KILLED IN CHIPPER ACCIDENT

Read the above and quit being stupid and blaming someone else for your mistake.. The driver was ultimately charged for the accident and has to live with that fact that he messed up. The remaining family lives on without the lost love ones..

Do YOU want to end up this way?

The Company that owned the vehicle was not held responsible but the DRIVER WAS. The driver FAILED to check to see if the coupler or the safety chain was properly attached. A coworker had connected the chipper NOT THE DRIVER.

I had it happen once with my pop-up. I failed to snap the catch. Popped right up. Luckly I was only a few feet from my campsite when it happened.

Just curious, I'm assuming this is a trailer you were transporting. Did the trailer get damaged? How fast were you going when it separated? And if you had any speed behind you, how did you handle stopping to get everything under control. Just curious.

Is it possible the coupler fell apart after you hitched up? You'd never know if something wiggled loose and literally unhitched when the right bump happened. Has your ball worn down so it does not fit any more?

if it was a false hitch I would have thought it would come off sooner than it did

Not necessarily. False hitch often "looks" true...coupler can appear to be almost all the way down on the ball, it's just not latched. A trailer can go quite a ways before it jolts off the ball, especially if you've got weight distribution and/or sway bars hooked up too.

If WD is hooked up it is impossible for the hitch to come off the ball.

Try this for yourself to see.
Hookup everything. The unlatch the hitch. Now use the tongue jack to try to lift it off the ball.
It can't be done.

FWIW, here is a posting from another Forum with the NHTSA recall information regarding certain Keystone travel trailers.

I read your original all caps question as "has anybody else had this happen to them."

I have had it happen in the past, but it was a false hitch situation. The latch was sitting on top of the ball and nobody noticed it. In the end nobody was hurt there was no damage and the safety chains held everything in check.

I had this happen with a 10' utility trailer.
Drove 250 and never came off.
Didn't know it until I back the lawn mower off and the back of the trailer and trailer hit the ground.
Probably weight of mower(6oolbs) kept it on ball.

Checking things over later, I found that the closed latch left would fit the room between the ball and front part of the hitch.

I agree that unless you can prove fault or failure of the hitch/ tongue that allowed it to come off, the driver is responsible.

I hope no one was hurt.

Nothin' like going back and reading the opening post again...I can't believe I missed that you're evidently doing this for a living; is that right, O.P.?

If so, and this was someone else's trailer that you dropped: What's happened? Insurance company refusing to pay?

Not quite sure what help we can offer here. It sounds like it wasn't properly connected from the start. If it were me I'd feel obligated to make sure it's connected correctly (not saying you didn't). And once it happened I'd be at fault, and I'd be letting my commercial insurance policy company know right away. Good luck...

If you are towing it you are responsible to check everything.
