I think Mr. Murphy is following me

Planned a trip to Mt. Rushmore 8 months ago and had all the details set by mid-summer. Spent the summer going over the 5th wheel getting it all prepped for the trip and going over the truck. I had no qualms about leaving and driving 1300 miles from Tucson to Hill City, SD. Everything was going OK until Denver. Between Denver and Ft. Collins, I had a right rear tire on the truck come apart. Didn't hit anything, just had the tread separate from the carcass. These were 4 year old Generals that had about 24K miles on them. The truck gets driven every week, so it wasn't from sitting. Still was fully inflated and allowed me to slow down and get off to the shoulder of I-25 and change the tire.

Next exit had a tire dealer but they had nothing I was interested in with the size I am using. Called their main store in Ft. Collins, about 25 miles away and they had something. I asked them to inflate the spare to 80 psi and we left for that store. Didn't get 10 miles and the spare started to come apart. Limped along on the frontage road at 40 mph and got two new tires installed. Great people by the way, GCR Tire is the name.

While in SD, a cold front moved in, down to 20 degrees one night and we had 8 inches of snow overnight and the next morning. Earliest recorded measureable snow they have ever had. Lost two days of my vacation as we didn't go out. Next morning, one of the batteries on the truck has died.

Limped home by disconnecting the bad battery so it wouldn't draw the good one down. Fortunately for us, the weather after that snow and cold spell was fairly mild and I had no trouble starting the truck on one battery. However, while the weather was mild, we had rain from Raton, NM all the way to the AZ border. Thank you tropical storm Odile. We expect 3-5 inches of rain here in Tucson the next two days.

I enjoyed the stay in SD but it was certainly one of the most stressful trips I have ever had. At times, I wanted to give up RV'ing
and just stay at home. Now that I have returned home, all is well, except I come home to find that someone got my American Express card number and charged $8K to it while we were gone. Took about two hours last night on the phone with the parties involved to get it taken care of. I'm not out the money, but it sure is a hassle.

Oh yeah, I still have to deal with about $1K dollars of damage to the truck and get a new battery. The bad one has about 3 years of warranty left, but I will probably have to get two, I'm not a fan of one old and one new battery. That is usually a recipe for problems.

So, I wish Mr. Murphy would go follow somebody else for a while, I certainly think I have had enough.

He must have left you and found us in Nevada!
Our front AC quit working. No problem in cool Oregon but in Las Vegas 110 degree heat whew!! Couldn't find anybody to replace it without a long wait until Vegas. Thank you Apache RV Service for working us in! Here's where it gets crappy...Had an early appt to take RV in to have AC replaced. DH drove toad to jiffy store and the toad died. Wouldn't start. Got someone to bring him back to the RV. Good thing brother in law with us on this trip. Went to open screen door on RV and handle broke. B-I-L followed us to RV shop, brought us back. Called Coach Net to come tow toad. Meantime truck started. Call back Coach Net to cancel tow. While toad running took it to Chevrolet dealership, B-I-L followed us and brought us back to their RV. Did I mention it was 110 degrees in the shade??? Anyhoo... 3pm new AC installed, B-I-L took us back RV shop to get RV. On the way back to the campground some idiot bumped us in the rear end. Hit the tow bar (thank goodness). 3 lanes of traffic bumper to bumper. Did I mention it was 110 degrees??? No way to pull over. Finally got RV back to campground, changed the screen door handle and went to put back in plexi glass slide panels and one cracked (probably from heat!) and cut DH's hand. Chevy place called and ignition thingy had to be replaced. 4pm - called Chevy place to find out about truck promised to be done by 5pm. With traffic and the day we were having, figured we better leave early!! B-I-L again took us back to Chevy place. By this time he was pooped from driving us all over Vegas!! Finally got the toad back and sat down in the now COOL RV!!! DH said he was about ready to give it all up!! Without visiting a casino we lost over two thousand dollars in Vegas!! LOL. Now... what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!! We're leaving Mr Murphy behind!!

Here's to you getting home safe and still having a memorable story to tell!

BTW, that cold front that moved through was very unexpected...at least by my standards.
I love me some land yachting

It must be something with SD. On our last trip across it, I lost the fan clutch. We drove most of SD's length to Sioux Falls at 55 mph with the A/C off in 90 degree weather where I had the replacement part waiting for me. Going into the state from WY, we just missed a large hail storm (making it look like it just snowed in June) that took out store skylights and power...

It is awfully close to Devils Tower where those aliens landed in Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind.

Murphy must be in that area this year. My alternator stopped working on the way to Rushmore in July. Four places in Gillette WY that I called would not get me in that day for easy money (including the Ford dealer). O'Rielly had the alternator and $15 tool set and I was on my way with just two hour delay.

Also in SD my transmission starts acting up but still drivable. Made it back to So Cal to rebuild the valve body.

Further my 8 year old inverter gave out in that area. Did without until returning home.

I think I would have enjoyed your snow but not the tire issues. It all works out but still a bit on edge to get things resolved in the moment.
