Is there a break in period before I can tow?

I am buying a new 2017 f250 0 miles on Friday. We leave out for a 3 hour tow 8700 lb travel trailer 6 days after that. Is there a certain mileage I should but on this before hooking and towing?

On my last two GMs, I did not have time to do the 500 miles... We had to leave with only 300/350 on them. We tow pretty heavy at about 22/24K gross.

Never any issues with the rear end. At the 1st diff fluid change, there was hardly anything on the magnenet, and the fluid was very clean.

The main reason for break-in before towing is to get even wear on the front and back sides of the hypoid gear teeth in the differential from both coasting and accelerating so they mesh correctly. If you don't do this they will be noisy. Nobody cares if the differentials whine on a class 8 truck.

Does Ford sell any new trucks with 1,000 miles on them? Seriously.

Don't know about ford, but GM says something like 500 miles before towing at a minimum to allow the rear diff gears to wear in. and then there is the std. speed etc. for the first xxx miles.

Ditto. GM Has said 500 miles for at least the last 30 years in their owner's manual

With my F 150, Ford recommended 1000 miles before towing.

We had the same issue...but with a F150.....500 mile break in period. We did a lot of long day trips that first week to get past 500 miles so we could tow up north the next week. New truck, we didnโ€™t mind. ๐Ÿ™‚

Do what your owner's manual says. No need for second hand advice. And don't take the dealer's word for it, half the time they don't know what they are talking about.

Just don't be calling your TT by the name, "SS Minnow".

There will most likely be a recommended 500 miles break-in period before towing.

If you are going to tow within the 500 mile suggested break in period then I would suggest taking back roads and NOT the expressway. vary your speed as in stop and go through towns and do not go expressway speeds for a long period of time. Drive the heck out of it around town before you head out.

I bought a new 2017 f250 last October. Break in was 500 miles before towing. Our TT is about 7500lbs loaded to camp. My thoughts since I bought the truck brand new is to do all recommended maintenance etc from day one by the book. 9k miles later I could not be more happy. Beast of a truck.
