Jacks - cleaning

I started to clean the jacks on the TCer. Only one was really bad with a lot of rust so I took a drill and a couple brass wire disks and cleaned them all up. Now they are looking pretty clean but already showing some new surface rust starting. So what would be good to stop the metal from rusting? Really do not want to paint them, although they would look really cool done in a flat black. Would like something that would stay fluid if there is such a thing as I could continue to clean them as I have time and then just wipe on or spray on more after.

Any ideas?

After doing a good cleaning on some of the jacks with the navel jelly the weather turned rainy and snowy. Sure enough some of the rust started to come back (some more just a rust satin than anything), so yesterday I went out and did some research and found several products at my local Princess Auto that claim to waterproof and stop rust. The active ingredient is Lanolin, a couple of the products actually say they reverse rust damage. Picked up one made by a company called Lloyd's (a Canadian company so may not be available in the US). They say it can be applied over wet metal and it will work, so gave it a shot. Well it took hold even to the wet and cold metal, did loosen some of the lighter rust (more the stain than actual rust) but in a couple places with heavier rust that I never got to clean it did nothing like the NJ did.

I applied the Lanolin and then took a rag and wiped off the heavy accumulation around bolts and brackets and then tried wiping this on my window frames, they are not rusted but have some oxidation on them. WOW, they look new!!! Then tried some on the stainless and the aluminum and it cleaned them up as well. Took away any oxidation or stains and looks very nice.

Hopefully this will stop the rusting in the future and keep the oxidation away for another 10 years or so.

So far I have not done anything to them as I still have a few places to remove the rust from. I am not looking at painting them as I think this would make more work for upkeep in the future. I would like something that I could rub/spray on and it would protect.

As for why they rusted I have no idea why. One of the tops was 90% rusted, most was the pump parts on the side and some of the mount brackets had rust as well as the top of the feet.

In the states, every hardware store and lumber yard carries it.

Photomike, were your jacks originally galvanized? They shouldn't be rusting.

Naval Jelly is an excellent rust cleaner. Follow with Rustoleum rusty metal primer and a Rustoleum finish paint - should be good for several years.

Photomike,
Did you paint after treating with the Naval Jelly?
I have my jacks removed now and was trying to decide how to remove rust and what to paint with. The brackets on my camper also have some rust. I'll be watching this thread for a while.
