likely the TV antenna shot? or just needs lubrication?

The crank-up television antenna's operation is so stiff that I gave up rather than keep cranking it to the point it snapped the gears...does it seem more likely that it's shot and needs to be replaced, or can be saved/restored with proper lubrication/servicing?
Thanks

If it is "Shot" it can have just the gear parts replaced for much cheaper. The link above can get you started.

Thank you for being the sort of person that doesn't keep forcing it until it breaks !

I don't know how to lucubrate your model but, that is what you need to do before you wreck it and then it will cost more money to fix it.

You are on the right track to ask the members here before you break it.

What type of antennae do you have and what year was it made?

When was the last time you did the routine maintenance on that crank up antenna?
Is it time for your medication or mine?

The antenna housing needs proper annual maintenance and is mostly lubrication. Also, I have found since we camp mostly at state parks, sometimes twigs, nuts, and other pieces of debris will get in the mechanisms. So when the crank gets hard to turn, go look for a cause. The installation manual that came with the unit if you still have it outlines what needs to be done. If you don't have one the Winegard website should have one you can download.

If its a winegard they have a lube point up on the roof in the base of the antennae. You pop off a rubber cover and use silicone spray I believe. Dont force the crank or the whole unit falls apart pretty easily. Have somebody inside turn the crank after while you "assist" it to the up position and work it a few times once lubed. if that doesn't do the trick then something inside the mechanism is faulty.
