little help... 08' Powerstroke 6.4L Diesel eval.

Am checking out a low mileage (30k) 2008 6.4L F350 Diesel. 4x4.
Scheduled for a test drive. For sale by owner. Good documented
service history. Used to tow boat, and in bed camper. Dually,
4.3 rear end. Has not been daily driver.

A search on line (forums) indicates recurrent issues with:
radiator, EGR cooler, injectors, turbo issues, fuel consumption.
Owner has not messed with tuners/DPF delete (alledgedly). Only
after-market mods... air-lift, Rancho shocks.

My question... if you were evaluating for purchase what would
focus on ???

I'm a Ford man, always have been. Have had nothing but Fords for my company. Had 6.0's and 6.4's. Will always go with Fords but in all honesty, if you can't get a 2011 or newer 6.7 go with a used Dodge.

Good grief I have never seen so much misinformation. I have owned both the 6.4 and the 6.7. Biggest difference is the 6 speed transmission. This forum would be the last place I would ask for diesel advice on any brand...probably would not even ask about seat covers.

I was going to but a 6.4 from my son who sells for a Chrysler dealership....it was a used truck in beautiful shape with under 90k miles. I talked to my nephew, who is a certified Ford diesel master mechanic. He said to walk away from a used 6.0 diesel, but run like he!! from a 6.4. He rebulids them all the time and said they cost about twice as much to rebuild as a 6.0.....the 6.7 is supposed to be the NEW 7.3 in terms of reliability.....i would start running.

Ok. Thanks for the input.

Lemme see if I got this right...

Ford bad...Ford Diesel worse. (They sure seem to
sell a lot of them). The 6.4L a disaster waiting to happen.

That about sum it up ?

We have decided to pass on the test drive. The casual
pace of our search has been guided by the dependability
of my 8.1 L gasser with Allison.

Actually, the info that swayed us was the transitional status
of the 6.4L (bridge between 6.0L and 6.7L/7.3L). That gets scary...
in regards to resale/parts supply/support. Although, my Big block
is no longer available from GM ... so could possibly be over
estimating that part of the equation.

Thanks again.

Nope, not IMHO.

Ford = VERY GOOD

SOME Ford diesels = Bad

All Ford gas engines (that I know of) = GOOD to VERY GOOD.

There fixe it for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

I never said Ford was bad just that their Diesel engines from 2004 to 2010 were questionable. They could cost up to $15,000 for replacement, if you are looking between 2004 and 2010 in you budget, and want a diesel, go Ram or GM.

For what its worth, I picked up an 09 F250 with the 6.8 V10 gasser this year. Plenty of power and torque to pull. The engine is practically bullet proof. I had an 08 F150 with the 5.4L which was awesome and is the same engine as the 6.8L just with 2 more cylinders.
I decided on this after reading all the negatives about the 6.4 Diesel and I love the truck. MPG is not much different then the 6.4 either.

for what it's worth, I had zero problems with my '09. The 6.0 has more problems than the 6.4. We also have 5 6.0's in the family from 03-06 and no problems with those either but none of us have tuners or any of that aftermarket******on them.

Everyone has an opinion. Some good and some bad. Strange part is every time I go to town I see more of them than most other brands. Can't be all junk! Another note here. The previous owner of my 6.0 killed it with a tuner. It went south shortly after I bought it. Ford fixed it and replaced the head gaskets and the cab never came off the truck.

Just educate yourself as you are.

I'm looking for a newer truck-and WOULD buy and 08 if it was the right truck at the right price-everything in my search is about value-a mpg or two can be compensated for if I save three grand.

Most of my 7.3s only get 11 or 12 when they're loaded solo. I know people that have had terrible luck with 08s and others that swear by them...

Knowing what to look for-and the history of the vehicle, will help you make a good decision...

I only know one guy with a 6.4L. It genaded on him at 180, 000km (110, 000miles). Cost him mucho grande to get it fixed and he traded it. He said the dealer told him it dropped a valve after a rocker arm broke.
