Here is a link to survey data from USA Today for the percentage of vehicle types with over 200,000 miles on them.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2014/02/23/long-lasting-200000-miles/5704783/

The biggest surprise to me was no Rams. The next surprise was that Chevrolets either outlast or simply get driven more that the GMC counterparts.

Here is a summary of the data:

1. Ford F-250 Super Duty, 4.3%

2. Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, 3.6%

3. Chevrolet Suburban, 3.6%

4. Toyota 4Runner, 3.5%

5. Ford Expedition, 3%

6. GMC Sierra 2500HD, 2.7%

7. Chevrolet Tahoe, 2.1%

8. GMC Yukon XL, 1.9%

9. Toyota Sequoia. 1.7%

10. GMC Sierra 1500, 1.6%

11. GMC Yukon, 1.6%

I don't know if I buy the numbers. Ford Expedition seems really high to me. We have one with only 75K on it and I honestly don't see this thing making 200K

I'm up there with my F-150. Chances are those Expys are equipped with the same Triton engine. No worries.

Maybe Dodge owners are more modest... 🙂
My 94 2500 Cummins auto tranny has over 240,000 on it. No rust. Runs strong. Had to overhaul the tranny and replace the water pump.
So much to experience, so little time.

I wonder if the list is saturated with larger vehicles because they are more expensive? Owners are more willing to do larger repairs (such as transmissions) as opposed to a small car where its just not worth it to spend a lot of money to repair in order to keep it on the road.

Not 3 million but a whole lot more than the nay sayers say they'll go. If Ford would offer the Focus in a hybrid, it might give some serious competition to the Prius.

Oregon DOT has does lifecycle testing on their hybrids. Current record is around 350,000 on an Escape Hybrid. The director told me the hybrid batteries fail at 10-12 years, regardless of miles or miles or make.

Who cares!

Somewhere in Long Island right now Irv Gordon is reading this and laughing to himself.

Mr. Gordon has a phenomenal achievement and has driven 3,000,000 (Yes, 3 Million!) miles in the same car - a shiny, red 1966 Volvo P1800. Gordon, a 74-year-old retired science teacher from Patchogue, N.Y., holds the Guinness Book of World Records recognition for most miles driven by a single owner in a non-commercial vehicle, and has driven over 3 million miles in his shiny red Volvo.

So take that Ford! 😉

Quite a car and quite a driver. I had a '62 Volvo PV 544s with the B18S 4 cylinder Volvo engine. Similar to the P1800 power plant but with not quite as hot a cam.

It had twin carbs....but the Volvo engine at that time (1950's-60's)had very large bearings, high nickel content in the block, had been tested to run at 6500 rpm and was actually half of the Volvo medium duty truck 3.6 liter V8.

A rugged engine. I also recall the 4 speed synchromesh transmission was beefy (think it was a Borg-Warner ) and the rear differential was I believe made by Spicer gear.

So there you have it...a car with for it's size, over engineered components...which lead to a long, reliable life if maintained well and driven sensibly.

I've read articles on Mr. Gordon's Volvo and it sounds like he is an excellent caretaker of his vehicle...both in maintenance and driving style.

Are all the F-250 and 2500HD trucks diesel? It looks like gas engines have proven to be almost as reliable as diesels.

Almost as reliable? You're a funny guy!
