Mind the gap

Hey all, just wanted to share a simple but very effective โ€œmodโ€ I did on our 2018 AF 990. Neither my girlfriend nor I are a fan of large gaps in bathroom doors in RVโ€™s which is something we always seem to see in certain floor plans. We were very happy to find our Arctic Fox has a sliding door into the rear wet bath rather than a standard hinged door, granting us access to the bathroom while the slide is in. However because of this design there is about a 1 1/2โ€ gap between the back side of the door and the wall on which it hangs. This might seem trivial to some, but it matters to us newbies. Something about being able to make eye contact with my gf while sheโ€™s on the bed and Iโ€™m on the toilet didnโ€™t feel right to me.

I got the idea to insulate this gap with two overlapping foam strips. Pretty self explanatory as you can see in the pictures below.

The two strips โ€œsmooshโ€ together just a bit when the door is closed, and having one on each side closes up the gap completely. I think the foam was about $7.50 at Home Depot, so all in all, cheap, simple, and effective!

The foam is a good fix if the door isn't wide enough to overlap properly.

We don't have the issue with our '05 990. The bottom door track is a piece of plastic that keeps the door from swinging out away from the wall, the door overlaps the door frame about 3 inches on one side and about an inch on the latch side, and the door to wall distance is probably less than 3/8" at the top. You can only see out if you press your face against the door and then not very well.

The only issue my wife had with it was when we first bought. It was that she could see out the crack on the right hand side where the latch is. This allowed her to see out the back door window.

I moved the latch plate on the wall to the rear of the camper about 3/4" allowing the door to slide past the door frame that much further, ended her distress with the view.

I guess the older campers had a wider bathroom door. We have to partially close the bathroom door to open the pantry door. They may have changed it on the newer models for that reason, who knows.

Not a bad idea. I will try that in my rattling bathroom door.... and take my word for it, after you have been together or married as long as we have, my wife seeing me on the throne or vice versa is no biggie.
