ksss I'm a betting man and I bet it will end up doing as well as the Ram ecodiesel. When the Ram went on sale it sold out in less than 3 days. Even taking some engines out of the Jeep lineup this year they continue to sell out in 3-5 days each month with a 6 week average lot time.

I would except the Colorado to do the same and GM knows this too. Oh BTW I just filled my truck this morning and paid $2.29 a gallon for diesel, regular gas was $2.49 with premium selling for $2.89! Yep OH48Lt that kinda kills your idea on fuel costs now doesn't it.

GM's sales goals for the Diesel Colorado are pretty tame around %10 I believe I read. I think they should make the little Duramax available in more configurations, but perhaps that will come later. So far I think the little pickup has exceeded GM's sales expectations and has been surprising a lot of people that would never have considered a GM product (not a lot of conquest sales so far, but the feedback from other owners has been good). I think it is a great product for GM.

People seem to be forgetting that you can get a DIESEL with much better gas mileage for about the same (or less) than a half ton with gas and worse mileage.

People that want a pickup but need better gas mileage will look at this vehicle.

Some people that just want a pickup will look at this vehicle. Heck, look at the Toyota Tacoma... it can't tow very much, the gas mileage isn't much better than the full size Tundra, they cost just about the same... but the Tacoma outsells the Tundra almost every month...

More expensive, less power, less room, less payload, less tow capability, and about equal gas mileage. Some truck buyers simply don't care about things like that and buy what they want.

Good for GM to get into the diesel market in a smaller truck. Hope they do well.

Don't forget that smaller trucks also

  • fit off road better
  • fits in tight parking garages at work better
  • fits in some home garages better
  • you can reach over the side of the truck and touch the bottom of the bed
  • Some people are just intimidated by big trucks
  • others prefer to simply have a smaller form factor
  • many consider 7,000 lbs tow rating substantial
  • Colorado has nearly 1500 lbs of payload which is more than enough for a lot of people

Not sure why some people can't or won't understand that these smaller turbo diesels are way more efficient than Ford's Eco-Boost. Good for GM for understanding that! At 30 mpg highway in my Ecodiesel (when I drive 65 mph) not even the 2.7 EB can come close to it.

GM is going to sell a ton of theses trucks and I bet they put a diesel in their 1500 when they do their redo in 2018?

BTW OH48Lt you must not get out much, diesel in our area is lower than gas right now and has been for sometime now. Well maybe not in Whitehouse lol.

Kiddos? You darn young wippersnappers are still kids! Likely still are wet behind the ears? Our oldest great grand kid is 13 now and not far from 14. So not very far from "great great grand kids" now! We have 6 GG kids now and another in the oven presently.

We'd had our first kid just after college which was so long ago and he's also retired now as is his younger sister. Lots of water's gone over the dam and probably the same water has many times over and over so far. However, I don't feel or even consider myself very old at all, just well tested! All the years of intense business owning responsibility and our 51 years of RV'ing and boating have kept me/us real "young"!

Yes you got beat on the age category, but my wifes birthday was last week and I even told her she was old. The dog house didn't sleep too good that night. :E

Is Ric really that old? :B

The difference in price between a Colorado and a similarly equipped 1500 is roughly 10 grand. If you don't need the extra size, why pay for it? I friend of mine just bought the GMC version, loaded, and its a nice truck. He just needs a little bit of space to haul a few pieces of equipment for his crash reconstruction business, and doesn't haul hardly anything else. The smaller pickup is perfect for him, and a lot of people have similar needs.

There is a market for the medium-size pickups, but the diesel option is a loser from the get-go. Pay $4K for an anemic diesel, fuel mileage is only marginally better at most, and you pay more for fuel and maintenance. On the back end, you won't get more for it at trade-in time, they won't sell. Let's revisit this thread in 5 years, and see whats happened since then. Bet there won't be a diesel option for medium size pickups in the USA market.

Not sure at my age I qualify as "kiddo". Add on the responsibility of being a manufacturing manager with ~300 production personnel, 2 production supervisors, and 5 manufacturing engineers. I deal with plenty of "kiddo's" at work. 🙂

To me and for those in the know about trucks, gas or diesel Colorado, a truck of this size and costing prit near what a full size 1/2 ton, I'd go w/ the 1/2 tone. Pricing of the Colorado is insane. I fully understand too that a full size truck is too much for some and the mid size is just right. However, I cannot justify spending 30-40K on a mid size and for 5-10grand more, you have a full size w/ a lot more capability.
Based on capability alone what you're saying makes sense.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, depending on perspective, a large segment of the market doesn't put a high priority on "capability".

The best selling 1/2 ton models have MSRP's around $45k-$50k. Reasonably equipped, 3/4 - 1 ton, 4x4, Big 3 diesels have MSRP's around $50k.

There appears to be a large portion of the truck market that puts a much higher priority on leather seats, extra knobs, two-tone paint, chrome trim, and flashing dash lights . . . than they do on payload/tow capacity.

The average sold price on a 2015 F150 is $5000 higher than what I paid for the truck in my sig in June. $44,000, and most of them have P rated tires are rated to carry the same load as my wife's Honda Pilot.

goducks10 is correct.

I priced out a loaded Colorado Crew cab (2016) with leather and nearly every option minus sunroof and the IBC... It was 33k... Same price in a Silverado crew cab MAY get you cloth seats and carpet on the floor in a Silverado Crew Cab.

It's a fun truck to drive too...

Thanks!

I know someone that went out to buy a Colorado and came home with a 1500 crew cab for the same price with the same options.

This one came in right at $29k before taxes.
Very few options though, bigger engine, 4x4, tow package. Funny no mirror adjustment switch
