New tow vehicle-releveling WDH

We just sold our TV and will be replacing it before next spring. But it got me to thinking-the next time we hook up our trailer and pull it out of the shed, we’ll have a different truck up front. I’ve never towed our trailer with a different truck and our wdh was set up at the dealer initially. Any tips to getting it level? I highly doubt it will sit the same out of the box.

I towed with a 2008 Explorer and when I bought my 2019 F150, the receiver was under 1” height difference increase in height. I hooked up the WDH with no change on the TT. Trailer was still within an inch of level. Truck specs were within WDH setup specs.
THEN I had the TT axle moved from over to under the springs for increased clearance (5.5”). I had to flip the WDH drawbar stinger to up from down. First attempt was one hole low and TT was nose down. It wasn’t too bad, but I decided while I had the borrowed big sockets and wrenches to try that next hole up. Close to perfect as it can be. Been meaning to buy the correct size tools but the WDH is my only use for those. Borrowed from SIL, he tears vehicles apart for demo derby and scrapping and has a full size small tractor and implements. Your WDH manual will list the wrenches needed. Then a tape measure and a very level place are all that is needed. My dealer had a flat level concrete pad that extended out the shop door for TV & TT to set on for WDH setup. Me, I just use the local high school bus lane foe measurements after getting it close at home on my semi level drive ;(

Winter Reading for you to review. The goals of all WDH are the same, but vary is how it is adjusted. Return front axle weight and trailer level to slightly nose down.

Download the WDH instructions from the manufacturer so you can check it yourself and readjust. If your not comfortable DIY you'll just need to tow it as is to your RV dealer and let him set it

When we went from a Tundra to a RAM 3500 the only thing I had to change was the height of the ball as the RAM is higher. The height change required a new shank with a bigger drop too.

Depends... How much higher or lower is the new trucks hitch then the old one?

Is the hitch shank you currently have adjustable?

What kind of WD hitch do you have now? Is it adjustable?

This is the same hitch head I have now with a new truck. I towed the same trailer with it at the same setting (97 F150 new truck is a 13 F150)

I still have the same hitch.. I got a new TT and now I had to flip the hitch shank over and adjust the hitch head accordingly. It's now flipped and set to the lower hole on the short side of the shank.

The problem is getting those large size sockets or wrenches to fit! They don't come in your everyday socket set! 🙂

In the end, you need to have an adjustable shank if you need to adjust the height.. If you don't, then you need to get one..

Good luck, Mitch
