Former HTT owner - ROO 23SS - and mostly disagree with the naysayers. bikendan pretty much summed it up for you. You need to LOVE sleeping under canvas and it's best if you are storing at home so if you have wet canvas when you leave the CG, you can open up to let it thoroughly dry...absolutely crucial. Ours was an '07 and the ONLY time we had a very small leak was driving in a dreadful monsoon for some time and DH finally had enough and pulled off.....twice before we got out of it. When we opened up that night, there was a SMALL wet area that a good wipedown with a towel fixed nicely. Re the 10 mpg - 'fraid so, but ANY full height trailer, HTT or TT, will be the same. A pop-up is totally different, but we were not at all interested in the up-down-up-down in getting it loaded and ready to head out and then in reverse when you get home. We store at home and use ours as a little evening peace and quiet often. You have an A/C, furnace, complete kitchen, frig with freezer, cabinets, bathroom....all you need to do to head out is put in food and clothes. We loved it and hated to make the change to a TT, but simply put, we were getting too old and having the additional things to set up....not terrible at all, just extra.
It came down to changing to a TT or getting out of camping altogether and we chose the TT. We love it, too, but miss some of the uniqueness of the HTT. Only you can decide which is right for you, which is a good match for your tow vehicle and how you like to camp.
Notice that you're in TN....where?? We're West TN. And, yes, you already know it gets hot and sticky here in August...you just plan around that.
Strongly suggest you spend some time online before heading to dealers lots....too much temptation until you start narrowing your search down. Also, you might take a look online at RV Wholesalers, where we bought both our trailers and RV Direct. They both offer a huge list of manufacturers and models and you can save a mountain of money. We saved over $4000 on the HTT after allowing for travel $, and even more on the TT. They're in Lakeview, OH. Excellent folks to deal with and no games. No personal experience with RV Direct, but understand they are very good also. If nothing else you can look at a zillion floorplans and pix and then start narrowing your search. If you see something interesting, they'll email you the price...and it really is the price, no last minute surprises.
Good luck, happy shopping and make lots of happy camping memories.
BTW, as you're looking, just skip right over Smallwood's RV in Jackson....ridiculous prices and crazy to even try to buy misc after the sale. You don't want to go there.
