Ram Goes to Stunning 900 lb-ft of torque

The 2016 Ram 3500 breaks the towing record previously held by the old Ram 3500 (at 30,000 pounds) by moving up to 31,210 pounds, more than two tons beyond its closest rival. To get there, Ram went from 12 to 16 hardened bolts on the rear axle ring gear (for all trucks with the 11.8-inch axle), and used stronger materials in the differential case.

Looks like my '14 won't make it to the first oil change, I need the extra 35 lb/ft.

My 2007 3500 RAM has far less than 900 ft/lbs torque but it handles my 30' Fiver quite well. I don't think my stock clutch could have handled any more torque than it does (clutch was replaced about 1 1/2 years ago ).

Easy fix to that issue, install a double disk clutch!

The question will be whether it has enough payload to tow something that heavy and still be able to fill the cab with more than just the driver.

So a 1 ton truck weighing about 8500 +/- lbs is safe to tow almost FOUR TIMES ITS WEIGHT, but a half ton pulling a trailer that weighs as much as the truck is the proverbial "tail wagging the dog"...?

That being said, I think its incredible the amount of power that these trucks are producing! Gosh, 10 years ago we were happy with almost HALF the power output. Its amazing! I would be willing to sacrifice some of this insane power for better fuel economy though.

Well a semi tractor likely weighs in the range of 15 to 25K and can have a GCVWR of 80K to 105K.

The half ton is likely pulling a 9,000# TT, which has an easier time Wagging the Dog.

Remember what the semi weighs with the trailer bearing down on the rears ,I would add least another 20,000#

Luxury fifth wheel makers are churning out models exceeding 45' with 23,000# empty weights. In order to tie that much rig you used to have to pop for a $150,000 medium duty Freightliner. Now you can tow that trailer for half the money. And, yes, it will pull everything down to a safe stop with the extremely adequate Cummins exhaust brake.

Amazing how Ram now has Ford and GM playing catch up. Ford will likely be next to go to 900 plus pounds of torque and then it starts all over again. It keeps the testers heading up to the Eisenhower tunnel busy towing heavy trailers and watching speeds and fuel mileage.

And Ram has come a long way since 1989 when the Cummins in the Dodge put out only 400 foot pounds and 160 horsepower. Today, many gas engines easily put out 400 foot pounds of torque.

Remember these are "paper" numbers...

GM proved a couple years ago they can handle their own even if severely "derated" vs the comp on PAPER...

Realize there are a lot of uninformed buyers out there that only look at PAPER figures but some of know its not always about the numbers. Real world is where its at.

Why? :h. I just don't see ever needing that much power. My 2008 D/A pulls my 42' 14600 lb fiver like its not even there. What's the point.

Give me the smaller 5.0 Cummins as a lower cost option in the HD line. Now that would really get my attention. Anything else now is just bragging rights all the way up to the 1,000 ftlbs that I am sure will be reached by one of the big 3.

Pretty neat...not sure I would ever run that kind of weight...these new HD trucks are COMMERCIALS trucks if they are truly pulling that much weight. In TN anything over 26,000 lb GCVW requires a CDL.

So, if the question is "Can this 900 lb ft Cummins Dually pull a little 18k fiver?"...the answer is yes.

Thanks!

Jeremiah

Same 26k in Oregon but I'm pretty sure RV's don't count.

I bet this truck will get better fuel mileage than my 2011 Cummins Ram. Might be time for a new truck with that tractor engine.

The only time I really tap into the diesel power is if I encounter a slow vehicle at the bottom of a long steep hill and I'm towing. My truck is pretty tame by today's standards.
