Ram Goes to Stunning 900 lb-ft of torque

The 2016 Ram 3500 breaks the towing record previously held by the old Ram 3500 (at 30,000 pounds) by moving up to 31,210 pounds,more than two tons beyond its closest rival. To get there, Ram went from 12 to 16 hardened bolts on the rear axle ring gear (for all trucks with the 11.8-inch axle), and used stronger materials in the differential case.

the cost to keep up with the Jones has never been my thinking. Getting to and back seems best to me. When any rv of any kind comes up to pass I give a friendly wave and usually get one back. I am careful to let them know it is not a one finger wave of course. 62 mph is my speed. So 605 ft lbs of torque is just fine for what we tow.

Pretty neat...not sure I would ever run that kind of weight...these new HD trucks are COMMERCIALS trucks if they are truly pulling that much weight. In TN anything over 26,000 lb GCVW requires a CDL.

So, if the question is "Can this 900 lb ft Cummins Dually pull a little 18k fiver?"...the answer is yes.

Amazing how Ram now has Ford and GM playing catch up. Ford will likely be next to go to 900 plus pounds of torque and then it starts all over again. It keeps the testers heading up to the Eisenhower tunnel busy towing heavy trailers and watching speeds and fuel mileage.

And Ram has come a long way since 1989 when the Cummins in the Dodge put out only 400 foot pounds and 160 horsepower. Today, many gas engines easily put out 400 foot pounds of torque.

That's really a pretty good question. In the past the full torque rating has not been available until second or third gear, depending on the transmission it had.

So a 1 ton truck weighing about 8500 +/- lbs is safe to tow almost FOUR TIMES ITS WEIGHT, but a half ton pulling a trailer that weighs as much as the truck is the proverbial "tail wagging the dog"...?

That being said, I think its incredible the amount of power that these trucks are producing! Gosh, 10 years ago we were happy with almost HALF the power output. Its amazing! I would be willing to sacrifice some of this insane power for better fuel economy though.

That is just so now they only need to properly torque 75% of the bolts and still have 12 tightened to spec. 😄

Ram was using the AAM 11.5" rear axle however at 9700-9800 RAWR it was getting closer to AAM max. Wonder what the 11.8" axle is or when did they change ??

No typo. Been using the 11.8" diff since 2013 models IIRC.

Ditto. When I recently looked at these trucks the power and torque output was a complete non-factor in the decision. All three of the big diesels are stupid powerful at this point. I think all three ought to put more focus on mileage going forward.

Even though I think this is just a pissing match, don't believe everything you read in Allpar because I have proven them wrong many times. Just like how this statement is false since there is a Ford pickup that is also rated at 31,200 lbs towing. I own trucks from both of these manufacturers and I still think it is stupid and pointless to rate these trucks that high just for marketing purposes.
