Reality Check - Camper Weight

So I have a 2006 Bigfoot 25c9.4 that I carry on a 2005 ford f350 srw truck. The tag on the bigfoot says that it weighs 2400lbs (or there about) and I figure I've got about 1000lbs in the camper. The truck is equipped with firestone air bags and an aftermarket sway bar and seems to handle the weight just fine. However, I have toyo 35x12.5x20 mt's mounted on my stock 20" wheels, and they are only rated at 3200lbs (the tires, not sure about the wheels which are the stock ford harley wheels). I knew the camper caused me to exceed the truck's gvwr and the rear gawr, but I wasn't too concerned because I figured I was only exceeding the rating by a marginal amount; however, I finally scaled the truck this past weekend and the total weight was 13,400lbs and the rear axle weighed 8,400lbs. I was shocked to see that I had my rear tires overloaded by 1 ton. Obviously this is not acceptable so I am now looking to replace my wheels and tires. I really like the Toyo Mt's and noticed that if I go to a 285/75r18 in the same tire, the weight rating goes up to 4,080lb per tire. I would still be over, but I would be much closer. I am however having trouble finding an 18" wheel that is rated for a similar capacity. I know that I could also go the 19.5" route, but I'd really like a tire that is capable off road as I do like to go off the beaten path at times. So, any opinions on the 18" wheels with toyo mt tires vs 19.5's? Are there any decent looking 19.5 wheels out there? Sorry for the long post!

That is a heavy truck.

As I stated on your other thread, when I had my camper, the same as yours ,on my f250, it weighed in at 11750 loaded, full everything. I do have a 55 gallon fuel tank on the truck, which was full. I went with the vision wheels and bridgestone tires, I was very happy with the combo, but then a deal came I couldn't pass up on a Kodiak and I switched. Problem with the Kodiak is its great when loaded, but a bucking bronco when unloaded.I can't remember front vs rear weight, but it was what I expected, unlike yours.

My Bigfoot 25c9.6 also scales at about 10,600 loaded for the road. It can be a little different depending on the trip but nowhere near 12,000 ever. My gasser 2010 Chev. 3500 HD with stock wheels handles it great even with the 20 foot boat behind it.

I have a Bigfoot 10'6 A/c, 2 batts, and Onan genny. I have mine on a gas gmc HD. Mine weighs 10600 loaded full of food, beer, etc. 1/3 water and nothing in waste tanks. My rear axle weight was 6400lbs. I've weighed my rig multiple times and have come up with these numbers, give or take a bit.

You might want to recheck your weights. 8400lbs seems too high. If you have a diesel generally your front axle weight is higher, but rear shouldn't be that much higher.

My camper weighs 3800-4000 wet. You seem to be off by 2000lbs on your GVW and RAW. Maybe the scale is wrong?

See, this is what I am saying. My camper weighs around the same... 3800-4000

My truck is a gasser, Reddog1's is a diesel.

I too have weighed my truck and camper 3 times.

I find your weight reading strange. Wonder if the scales were off?

My truck, 2000BF 2500c 9'6" totally loaded, water, gas, propane, fridge full, wife, dog and I sits at 10,200lbs.
I know that 9'4" Bfoot is not any heavier than mine...

Redog1's BF is in the low 10,000 too... His is hugh.. 11'

Great, thank you! It looks like my wheels are only rated at 3,525lbs, but I think I'm just going to stick with them. I'm more worried about the tires, but when I switch to the 295/65r20's, I think I'll feel ok. I'm going to see what we can ditch from the camper so we can drop some weight (I think the cast iron set has to go).

skanj0 - Thank you!! I don't know how I missed the lt295/65r20. I looked down a list of toyo mt's and looked for the highest rated tires and only saw the 18's. Now I just need to determine if my stock 20" wheels are rated in the same ballpark.

BCBigfoot106: I don't know what to tell you but that is what the scale said, and I seriously doubt there was a problem with the scale as it was an Oregon DOT scale. My freshwater was full and my fuel tank was probably at about 1/4. The truck is a diesel, but like you said, I don't think that adds too much weight to the rear axle. I did have a load of firewood in my rear basket carrier which probably weighed about 250 - 300lbs, but again, the weight was MUCH higher then I anticipated.

I have some nice looking 17" aluminum wheels from American Racing rated at 3800lbs each. Might not be enough for your application, but you could call them to see what they have for 18". I run the Toyo MT's on them.

You could switch to 20" rims and run the Continental MPT 81 tires. I think those can be aired down.
