Rear axle loaded weight Poll

Recently I upgraded to 19.5 wheels/tires and have been thinking it's time to upgrade my old (1986)camper. So wondering how much weight others feel they can safely carry on their rigs rear axle for comparison purposes for those who wish to share.

Here is the Poll question: How much weight are you carrying on rear axle of your truck fully loaded with camper, water, gas, propane & any tows? Specify your configuration with the weight.

Here is my answer in bold to the poll with my current truck/tires, no tow for me.

99 F350 V10 SRW 2WD 245/70/19.5F, rear axle weight: 6980 lbs

Those are pretty low weights . What does the truck weigh empty ? Lance lists the DRY weight of the 835 at 2040# . Loaded should be close to 3000# .

I've looked around for my empties scale and I haven't found it but will post if I do. However, I remember the Camper weighed 2250 lbs before I put the a/c on it. The above weight ticket was before the a/c was put on it.

You won't find a lighter 3/4 ton truck. It's a work truck, rubber floor mats, no power windows or locks, or "fluff". Single CD player, single cab, single tank, single rear wheels, single cab 🙂 It does have a/c and cruise control, optional aluminum wheels. But it's a stripper. An I love it that way.

My 2005 F250 diesel extended cab short bed weighed 4500 lbs on the front and 2750 lbs on the rear when empty. I know diesels can be heavy, but that is a light gasoline truck.

With the big increases in GVWR in recent years it would be helpful to know the tare weights also . I suspect the gain in cargo capacity is not as great as the increase in GVWR would indicate .

02 GMC , cab/chassis , dumping alum flatbed , extra fluids , some tools , 20' chain , 2 people + dog , 50 gals fuel . GVWR = 12000 , front = 4800 , rear = 8600

front = 4320
rear = 3960
total = 8280

With camper loaded for bear .

front = 4400
rear = 7220
total = 11620

This is with the wife and I, 1/2 tank of fuel but missing 2 dogs 150 lbs, no food water or drinks and no trailer (600lbs TW)
and it was with our 2000 f350 7.3 Sc 4x4 DRW rated for GVWR 11,200, front GAWR 5200 and rear GAWR 8250

total 11060
front 4900
rear 6160

So loaded we were over our GVWR by about 1000lbs but under our axle and tire ratings.

With our 2015 F350 DRW we won't be anywhere near our ratings, 14000 GVWR , front GAWR 5940 and rear GAWR 9650. We will be weighing it next week trailer and all.

Your post got me thinking. I could probably carry your AF 990 with less than 8000 on my rear axle. My truck is a super cab not a club cab, I have 2wd instead of 4wd and I have SRW instead of duals. So I should weigh less at the scale on the rear axle. Plus I don't have dogs anymore. 🙂
Do you carry a lot of heavy options on your AF?
My wife really likes the AF campers.

It has the usual heavy options: A/C and Generator.

Let's say you save a couple hundred pounds, that's still 7,800 +-, or 3,900 lbs per wheel which is clearly 19.5 wheel territory if you want to stay under the max load rating on the tires. I wouldn't hesitate to throw on 19.5's if that is the TC your wife likes though :). We love it and it's probably the only TC we will ever own.

Yeah I have 19.5's 4950 per tire

This would be more helpful if every one included axle rating and GVWR.

GVWR is erroneous on my part these days, I've been erector setting my truck, its got bits from a number of different Dodges strapped onto it, now.

Rear axle I believe was rated for somewhere around 9000-10000lbs, can't remember what the front axle is rated for, but it usually has 3200lbs on it without the front basket loaded.
