Just saw the commercial for the first time tonight: Rotella for gas engines. It comes in a red jug. They say it's for oil for gas trucks.

I use the diesel oil in Red, but it has a flat tappet cam and the new oils aren't designed for that while the diesel oils are.

I found it at AutoZone on clearance a few weeks ago, and bought 12 quarts for about $40, then sent in a rebate form, and got $24 back in about a week. Total price was less than $20 for 12 quarts.

Zinc in many diesel engine oils will kill gasoline engine's CAT's

This oil is designed specifically for gas engines with correct amount of Zinc/Phos that's specified by API SN+ requirements. It's not designed to be used in diesel engines.

Sounds like it is just another oil for gas engines trying to capitalize on a famous brand name.

Since when ??

Sorry for this post.
Turns out that diesels, newer ones anyway, DO have a kind of CAT but it is somewhat different than those used on cars.

The zinc won't clogg your cat but the microscopic zinc particulates bond to the cat internals which prevents that surface from being active. Obviously this process doesn't happen over night but is accelerated typically with engines that burn oil.

These same zinc particulates can clog a dpf since the zinc metal doesn't burn off during regen. This is the number one reason zinc was reduced with the implementation of API CJ4 oils.

Same here... My wife's Dexos requiring Buick is the only gas engine that doesn't have Rotella.
