Someone got me/My truck good!

My tow vehicle has been going through DEF pump assemblies and Ford couldn't figure out why. The pump had been replaced twice and while we were towing the Excel home from the dealer, it threw the DTC for the pump again. I managed to limp it home and got it to the dealer yesterday. This time, Ford told them to drop the whole DEF assembly and inspect it. This involved removing the tank, heater assembly and pump. What they found, was disgusting. It looks as though someone had dumped a quart of motor oil in the DEF tank. It was all milky and soupy. Since it was contamination and not a defective pump, Ford won't cover it under warranty. A call to my insurance company and I found out that it is covered. They are sending an adjuster and will hopefully have it done by next week. We were planning on taking the Excel out camping this weekend... Not happening now!

Here's a picture of what they found in the tank:

I agree completely about buying DEF in sealed jugs. The money savings of buying it at the pump with the volume we go thru is peanuts compared to the repair costs from possible contamination.

Any discovery of what the material in the DEF was?

Still waiting on analysis..

Any news?

They told me they could test the DEF, but would be unable to determine the contaminate. I am still looking for options.

Check with your local heavy equipment deal like Cat, Deere, or the like. They have very good testing ability.

Back in the 90s my ice cream truck was vandalized. Water put in oil fill of generator and water in the brake master cylinder.

$14,000 tab on that Isuzu npr. Insurance claim. Crazy life back then. Shot at 3 times, and other mischief.

One horrible thought: there are other ways of getting that ammonia smell in that bottle.

$1352 for everything? From what I have read, that sounds like it has the decimal point in the wrong place.

This is the DEF system, not the fuel system. Put DEF in the fuel tank and it will cost you over $12,000

Guess I misunderstood the extent of your damage. Glad it wasn't too expensive.

EMD,
It's your call, but I would use DEF from a container going forwards as this is the only way to insure your putting in quality DEF.

I've done quite a bit of research, since this happened. Lots of horror stories to be found!

Even several stories of people buying DEF in the container, from Walmart, and returning it full of water. You just can't trust people these days!

Yes trust has become a sacred word these days.... Having said that I'm not surprised about the various horror stories, but the Blue DEF container does have a tamper proof seal on the lid so it should be a safe alternative to use. Also the final test is a quick sniff to verify you smell ammonia.

Good luck and keep on truckin...

You have to excuse the Troll from Colorado... We all know what beat of the drum he marches too! :W

Out of curiosity, how much did they pay? And what is the dealer replacing? Are they replacing everything DEF related?

Was told Friday, they are replacing everything. From the tank, to the injector. Parts and labor came to $1,352...
