Turns out this was a PLUS for us. This step is grated and heavy duty. I get to stomp on it pretty hard before entering the trailer and cleans up my boots pretty good.
I ran one of those locking coiled cables from the back of the pull out steps assy up thru my Coleman Road Trip Grille which usually sits by the door when setup and then goes thru the side of the folding step. Keeps these two items from growing legs and wandering off on me when I am away from the frailer...

Depends on the design whether this is feasible. In some cases leaving the bottom step unfolded prevents access to the middle tread /step, thereby causing another complication. I suspect this is the case with my RV which is not handy for me to check at the moment.
