Sway control

I purchased a 2014 Jayco Swift SLX 184bh. The RV dealer threw in the the hitch, load levelers and the sway control. The sway control is an Easy Lift.

We have camped about 4 times so far with no problems at all. I went to hook the camper up last weekend and noticed that I couldnt release the pressure off of the sway control bar by using the release lever. I went to the RV dealer and they said the the sway control bar was bent although there were no visible bends. They also said that I must have turned to sharp and caused the bend. I have been very careful not to turn to sharp with the sway control in place.

Is there something that I am doing wrong? Was it on too tight or did I turn to sharp. Or is this just a common problem. Just curious because a new sway control is $85.00 and I dont want to make the same mistake again.

This was news to me, I didn't know you could OVER tighten them.

Mine was swaying By-A-D and someone told me to tighten it up more so I did and it helped, but I'm also going to add a second.
I think the height of the LOFT makes it grab wind and sway more than others plus I've learned that over 25' long and they recommend a second sway control.

I had a brand new one on the drivers side (I use 2) after using it a couple times it built up some residue on the friction bar from the friction material. I didn't notice the build up and it really made the bar drag. I popped off one of the mini balls and bent the bar. I now check the slide bar occasionally and when there is build up I clean it with a wire brush. I also do not tighten it as much as before.

That's a new one on me. I've heard of breaking off one of the mini balls or breaking the mount on the bar, but not of just bending it. I think it was defective from the beginning. Most of those things are built with an intentional weak link to prevent major damage from something like turning too sharp or tightening the bar too much. Also, remember it is only a damper, not a brake. Snug it down good, but don't over tighten. Tighten until you feel the handle want to stop but don't bear down on it. Turning in forward or reverse should not be a problem.

I pulled the bolts out of the frame on mine, but it wasn't from backing up. It was from having the bar se to tight!

I'm still interested in if the backing up was a issue....really would like to know what happened, or if the OP found a fix.....

Who is Prolly? I didn't see where the Op said anything about anyone else tightening the unit.

Terryallan, sorry for the jab. My grammar is nowhere perfect, not even close. But for some reason Prolly just drives me nuts. Only two more letters to spell the correct word. I understand all the text shortcuts when you can save a lot of typing but that one I just don't understand. Glad you have a sense of humor!!

OP.. Please do me a favor.. go measure the distance from the miniball mount on the trailer a-frame to the coupler... measure this down the side of the a-frame... The miniball should be 24 inches from the coupler. If this is not exact there will be problems.

Thanks!
