Thinking about a Ford F350

Thinking about this truck as my DD. http://www.kwford.com/detail-2008-ford-super_duty_f~350-lariat-used-10574516.html

F350, 08, 6.4 Powerstroke,

Drove it yesterday and really like it.

My 06 Duramax will become my shop truck if I buy this one.

The ford has an Aux fuel tank in the bed. I need that out. I want an 8' bed so I can have more flexibility in hauling.

Any thoughts on the Aux tank?

Any thoughts on this Ford in general.

Thanks for the advise i get here. Really helpful.

I've always liked Ford and in 2008 we were going to buy one but after hearing about all the problems they were having with their diesel bought a Chevy. But tomorrow we are planning on buying a 2013 or maybe a 2014 350, not sure which one at the moment. I think they have solved the problems they had.

My 06 LBZ had 20,000 on when I bought it Nov 07. Fine truck. I have changed the oil every 5000 and that is about it. It had factory brakes til about 200,000....amazing. I did four injectors in Jan. I am 53 and have had lots of vehicles. This is the only one that I have ever kept long enough to pay it off.

Nasty spitting contest? When do those ever happen on this forum :W
It has been pretty polite lately except for a few. Maybe the skin is getting thicker with age :B
I'm thinking if you bought the Dmax used it was most likely one of NChaulers previous trucks :R No doubt the 06 LBZ is a keeper.

I told the Ford dealer this am I would buy the 08 Ford if he would provide a written 100,000 mile unconditional warranty on the drive train, radiators and fuel pump/s. Surprisingly he came back with a 24k mile warranty. I said no thanks as for me that is less than a year and just too risky.

I really appreciate the one or two Ford owners above that have had no difficulty. Unfortunately you are like a voice crying in the wilderness. There is just so much negative out there on these trucks. The ford is by far the quietest and nicest cabin...and I love my Duramax and planed to keep it...but was willing to buy the ford if less risk.

I found a nice Long Bed Ext Cab Chevy big block today and will probably buy it tomorrow if I feel the same as I do now. I will make it the shop truck and keep my 230,000 mile 06 Dmax as my DD.

I REALLY appreciate the input from everyone hear and am extra grateful this did not become a nasty spitting contest!

Atta Boy... 496 :B... BTW 230k miles on a 06 is pretty impressive!

BTW, I have driven a couple of Dodges in the last couple of days. I agree the truck is strong...but the interior kind of stinks. When you have that kind of money in a truck you need to feel the love. The dodge is strong and quiet with decent mileage.

BTW my Dmax is 06 230000 miles. Mileage just for those that are interested is about mid teens when not towing. about 11 towing either my flat nose 24' Cargo trailer or my 28' TT.

My '08 6.4 has 78,000 miles - mostly highway and a lot of carrying a Lance slide-in camper onto and off of the beach. It's been a very good truck and motor, other than the fuel mileage which S-U-C-K-S. I have had the radiator issue, which was replaced on warranty three years ago. I had a DPF fail last year, which was replaced on warranty and the DOC (Diesel CAT) just failed and was also replaced on warranty. My Engine & Drivetrain warranty runs out in February 2014 - IF either of those last two components fails again after warranty, I'll be in financial trouble. I didn't see the price of the DOC but the DPF was like $3700.00. Not sure what I'm going to do as yet - with the price of Diesel as high as it is, I may go with Ford's new gasoline engine. We'll see... don't know a lot about the Duramax but I do know that the Cummins Diesel motor would excite me, if installed in another truck! I think Dodge's weak point is the rest of their truck. Sorry!

The 2009 6.4 twin turbo I owned and drove/hauled with for more than 65k miles did a great job with NO issues. What you have to be careful of (really with any late model diesel) is that the 6.4 will make more horepower for the least amount of $$$ invested becuase its fuel system and turbos were capable from the factory. Therefore, many people pulled the DPF (maybe bypass EGR too) and put tuners on them and ran the heck out of them. I actually prefer the 6.4 over my current 6.7 but the new 6R140 six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift is awesome.

Just about every 6.4 psd I see around here has been deleted and tuned! Now the truck becomes a beast!

I believe the OP is requesting information about the 6.4 psd, but since one person has chimed in about the 6.7 psd and others about other makes I would like to add my experience into the mix.

I own a '12 Super Duty with a 6.7 psd and next week will be one year of ownership. During this past year I put on ~ 24k miles and I have not had one single issue. The truck has performed flawless.

My driving patterns consists of a daily city driver, towing the camper and boat quite frequently while returning outstanding fuel economy unloaded/loaded, delivering some serious performance.

About the 6.4 psd I've never owned one personnly, but a guy at work has a 09 with ~ 180k miles. He mostly drives highway miles and that's what the 6.4 with the first generation DPF prefers and his only shop visit was to replace a idler pully and new shocks this past year. The Ford 6.4 is not your city driver type of truck and it needs to be worked to keep the emissions system in check. Checking the fluids routenly will prevent any of the catastrophic failures like reported here also.

Unless the Ford comes at a great price I would pass on it along with the Cummins 6.7 (07-12) and look for a Chevy Duramax, but again it would have to be at a great price as well. And keep in mind any of these first generation emission diesel equiped trucks will develop issues if now worked hard.

Good luck...

I have a few Ford tech friends that I chat to about engines.

Almost everyone I talk to said they would rather have a 6.0 than a 6.4. :E Now that is saying something!

Just some of the common problems they talk about:

Fuel pump problems which takes out the whole fuel system to the tune of 10K+.

Radiator problems. Many more than one, some 4+.

Making oil problems.

Rocker arm failures.

Catastrophic engine failures.

Turbo failures.

But, as they say, it's your money and your gamble. ๐Ÿ™‚

I would not recommend the 6.4 L PSD. Fuel mileage is poor. Very Poor. While it is better than the 6.0L, radiator, injector issues as well as some others do seem to be a problem in many of them.

As other have noted, the GM Duramax of that era is a better choice. Or the Cummins RAM. Or step up to the 6.7 PSD if you really want a Ford.
