TINY HOUSE THOUGHTS

Just heard on the Portland news we are where the tiny house trend started. I have watched Tiny House builds on TV. They appear very heavy and do not appear very road worthy. I keep wondering if these people have ever heard of an RV? What am I missing here?

The tiny house craze seems to be driven by the need for new or unique TV shows more than anything else. HGTV seems to really have a lot on tiny homes. Although tiny homes are probably better designed for year around living they are not really designed to be road worthy for more than short distances in most cases. I suspect the mojor draw is, parking them on city lots without having to meet building codes or having to pay property taxes.

Which is why most zoned communities are enacting ordinances against them.

For what one costs, one could buy a new truck camper loaded, that is, if a person wants limited storage in a moveable home...

Tiny houses have been popular in the Northwest since at least the early 1970s, when they were called housetrucks. The only change is that now the rest of the country have heard of them.

They are often used by forestry workers who use them seasonally, and live in S&Bs during the off season.

They are not meant to be moved more than a couple times a year.
3/4 timing in a DIY van conversion. Backroads, mountains, boondocking, sometimes big cities for a change of pace.

You're not missing anything. The people who buy those overpriced boxes are the ones missing something.
Common sense is the first missing thing that comes to mind.
So funny, the exact same thing is said about RV'S in general. I know I would not want to pull a tiny house down the road. It might be fine set up on a lot as a cabin but not something I would want to be mobile.

A lot of the construction is far superior to that of a RV but that also makes them very heavy. 2x4 walls with sprayed in foam insulation and just heavy materials in general.
X2

Although I also think they are just a fad which people will find way too small for year 'round living and to soon fade away

On wheels a tiny house is just insane.
Just a waste of new money.

I think many of these tiny home owners think their homes will appreciate as a stick and brick will, many will probably be disappointed when it comes time to sell.

I always wince when these very young couples pay a fortune for a tiny house. Sure, it's great when they first start but what about when they're cooped up in that little space for months.
And then what happens when the inevitable babies come along...

Don't worry, it's just a fad that will eventually pass. Eventually, those tiny houses will become permanent chicken coops.

me too and the per square foot price borders on insane. Many coomunities are passing ordinances prohibiting them (ours did) as well.

An RV is a much better alternative and much less expensive per square foot, plus, it's actually road worthy (most of the time at least).
