I am running a Chevy diesel 3500 with a Northstar Laredo on the back. I do a little off-roading, but nothing radical. Mostly 4wd is for sand, mud and snow. I do drive some dirt roads with sharp rocks, like out to the Racetrack in Death Valley (I typically air down and go slow). I am looking for E rated tires that have some off-road ability, but are reasonably quiet and efficient on the highway. I know the two are often mutually exclusive but I thought I would ask.

Any recommendations or thoughts?

I wish I had 18" wheels.... so many more opti0ons for higher weight capacity tires over 17". If the NTG in 285/70 126LI is discontinued I will need to go to an 18" wheel.

This!!!

I'm running close to the same setup as you (check out my sig and profile). Mine are size 18's. A great All Terrain tire that is very quiet on the highway.

On my 2006 RAM Mega CTD I ran several sets of Cooper ATP's. Very good tire, long lasting, quiet, xlnt highway ride, good for desert (never ran in snow) and wet pavement. I could get about 48-50K miles a set on them. -Americas Tire-

My 2015 RAM Mega CTD came with a new set Pathfinder Sport A/T's. They are a generic "Americas Tire" brand manufactured by Kumho and closely resemble the Kumho Road Venture SAT tire. These tires blow away the Coopers on the highway for quiet, handling, etc. Was in desert sand with them a couple weeks ago and they did xlnt. 25% cheaper than the Coopers. I only have 8000 miles on them but they look like they are wearing nice/normal.

^^ I'm running Cooper ATP's on my rig. But if price were no object, I'd definitely be running M55's. They are an exceptionally built tire. I recall them being an actual medium duty tire. I think the national guard runs them on many of their vehicles because they're so stout.

Take a look at the Firestone Transforce AT tire, I've had a set for a long time, they wear like iron, are great on the road, and are adequate for dirt, sand, mud, etc.

Look at Nitto Terra Grappler tires. I have found them to offer higher weight carrying capacity for 17" rims for my needs.

In addition to the passe "E" letter nomenclature, pay attention to Load Index (LI) because not all "E" tires have the same weight carrying capacity.

My understanding (and if those in the know can correct me, please do) is that the "letter" rating now means the maximum tire PSI needed to achieve the LI for that particular tire.

Pretty happy with my Cooper ATP'S. Have about 5k on them. Surprisingly quiet on the hwy considering the tread. I also only do light off roading. Mostly loose/soft sections of sand. But with these tires, with the camper on, I've yet to need to shift into 4wd.

E-10 rated tire @3650 lbs.
