Tow vehicle F150

I just sold my F150 which i used to tow my 29 foot Wildwood. It appeared to meet a specs necessary (the RV when fully loaded weighs around 5800). I know i pushing payload.

Anyway I want to buy something used that has more payload and I would feel more comfortable with. If I wanted to stay in the 150 range, does anyone have recommendations?

If you don't mind give us a follow up sometime. Since you got the flex fuel engine any comments on that would be interesting too.

I also went from a 2010 F150 EB to a F250 6.2 gasser. EB was fine with the trailer in my sig, but the F250 is much more stable. The EB had LT tires, after market intercooler and 5 Star tune. Got about 9 mpg towing. The 6.2 gets 8.5 towing. Also it's not just the payload, the mass weight of the F250 makes towing more stable. Order a truck through a fleet manager to get exactly what you want. Remember, the fancier the truck, the less payload.

NWnative..Thanks for the info. Still on the fence. I really like the F250 gasser, just not the mileage. The ones I have seen have 3.73 axles. Did you special order yours?

Yeah - Special Ordered it exactly how I wanted it. Very hard to find 4.30's on the lot in my neck of the woods. About 10 weeks from placing order to delivery for mine. Mine's not a daily driver so mileage wasn't a concern for me. Mainly used for towing.

I would suggest......another F150 then.
Not sure what the question is. You sold your (presumably) old truck and want a new half ton to do a half ton truck's job.
Answer, get another half ton.
IF you stay on this thread too long, someone may convince you to get a F350 diesel!

NWnative...I am looking at 2019 f250 6.2 also. Just curious about real mileage towing / non towing. You have any in fo on that?

To OP: My 2013 3.5 ECO pulls our 6000lb loaded tt great. LT tires and Bilstein shocks. Don't know what you have...

Only have 210 miles on it so no details yet. On the Ford Forum, the guys with the 6.2 and 4.30 Axles report anywhere from 8-10 towing and 12-15 highway empty. I came out of a 3.5EB where I got close to 10 towing and 17-20 highway. Towing is going to be pretty close to the Ecoboost however, you will take a hit for normal everyday driving with the 6.2.

So why exactly do you want a 1/2 ton?

What is your usage pattern?

5800# is probably fine with a properly spec'ed 1/2 ton but if you are going bigger, a 3/4 or 1 ton starts to look real nice.

I think that we need more detail as to why you were not happy with the F150. I pull quite a bit more than that with mine and am satisfied. How was your truck configured? How about the hitch? What year model was it? What are you expecting? I don't think that anyone's half ton will exceed a properly equipped and set up F150 so recommending something in that range is difficult without a better description of what went wrong.

The F250 is a more solid and forgiving platform for not much more money up front, at least for the gas version. It does give up some ride quality and fuel economy though.

X2

What is your current payload?
What kind of tires , P or LT?
What kind of hitch and sway control?
How many passengers and how much gear in the bed?

For less than 6000 loaded would expect a Max tow would do well. But would like more details on your current setup and why you don’t like it.

Good luck,

I was at the local dealer yesterday. Was told there are some changes to the availability of the 150 Heavy-Duty Payload Pkg. for 2019 vehicles. It is now optional on XL and XLT (Base/Mid) only. Not available on other trim levels.

I was hoping that they would go the other direction. I wanted the Max Payload package on my current truck but also wanted some other features that conflict with it.

Maybe the new 7.3l engine will better compete with the EcoBoost.

There are not a lot of them out there...but I have one and if you look around, you can find one...or special order one.

It's a 2018 F-150 SCAB, long wheelbase with an 8' bed.

Importantly it has the HD payload which gives a 2700 lb. payload.

Plus max tow package (which beefs up quite a few components). 3.5 ecoboost.

As a daily driver it gets 21-23 mpg.

New F250 in my Sig has 3110lbs of payload. Just upgraded from an F150. If it's payload your after, the 1/2 tons will leave you disappointed.

For used trucks, the aluminum-body F-150 is a good choice. My average SuperCab has 2019# payload. There’s the Heavy Duty Payload Package, if you can find one used.

You can also look at the GM trucks with the Max Trailering Package. Titan XD has 2000-2500 pounds.
