Have a question, How is traveling on HWY 2 top of Michigan over to Minnesota. I am thinking about coming back this way after a wedding in Grand Rapids Mn. Don't know if there are places to overnight and gas stations with plenty of room. Any ideas?

Maybe the right question is , is that way travel trailer friendly

There is also a casino along that route that has a very nice campground that is behind and off to the side of their parking lot,it is nicely separated from the parking lot. Just pull in pick a site and set up then use their courtesy phone and they will send a car to bring you to the hotel to register. Fee last Aug. was $20.

Coming through there after memorial day you will have no problem finding a camp site. No reservation needed. You will find state parks and private camping along US 2 every few miles. You will find Gas stations large enough to accommodate your rig along the way.In Escanaba there is the Island Casino with a beautiful Campground and a very large Gas station that you could stop at.
You will find all you need along US 2. ENjoy your trip.

OK, you made me get up and try to read what was left on one of our glasses....they've had a lot of use. It's Mackinaw Trail Winery in Manistique. Very picturesque, on the shoreline, nice varieties, reasonable prices. We left with a case. They have a "tasting price" as many do these days, but if you buy anything they sort of forget about that. Even tossed in the glasses we used at no charge. Very sweet Golden Retriever in charge of the place. A nice stop on a long-drive day.

We traveled up through Michigan to Houghton in the UP with our trailer the last two years. Very nice traveling! The bridge at Mackinac was neat (some say to watch the winds, but I didn't notice much). And both times we visited Mackinac Island. First time we walked it, Second time we brought our bikes. First time we stayed at Mackinac Mill Campground, pretty busy place, but nice, we had a view of the water from our site.

This past summer we stopped at http://munisingtouristpark.com/ to see the Pictured Rocks (glad I saw it from the water, now I'd like to hike the park! not enough time). Nice campground on the water.

Also found a nice little lunch spot in Munising -- http://www.johnny-dogs.com/

I suspect that it may have been Garden Bay Winery. They have both grape and fruit wines. All of them are fantastic!

It's a US two-lane, a lot of it through forests and along the Lakes. There will be plenty of gas stations along the way. Reserving camp ground spots is a good idea for the Holiday weekend. Bring warm clothes. I camped in the UP one Easter and there was still two feet of snow in the woods.

I used to travel from Escanaba MI to Duluth MN a lot.
As others have said, a scenic route. Two lane mostly, with some passing lanes thrown in every now and then. Also it is 2 lane from Duluth to Grand Rapids, MN.

You should have no problems getting gas. Duluth/Superior is a major town with some larger gas stations with good access. There are campgrounds across Highway 2 in the U.P. State Parks and Hiawatha NF and Ottawa NF, plus some private ones no doubt. In N. Wisconsin, there are campgrounds in the Chequamegon NF, and also Brule River State Forest. Also there are Walmarts in Superior, WI, Duluth MN and Cloquet, MN where you can probably overnight for free. My Allstays App says all of these allow overnight camping but the Walmart in Ashland, WI does not. Be sure to call and check beforehand. There are private campgrounds between Duluth and Grand Rapids. There is a nice COE campground on the west end of Grand Rapids, MN and just north of Grand Rapids there are campgrounds on the Chippewa NF. Trying to find places near Memorial Day may be difficult without reservations. On Memorial Day Weekend it will be nigh on impossible. After Memorial Day (on your way home) it should be a breeze, as kids are back in school and many campers consider the summer to be over. But it is a beautiful time of year to be camping and travelling. Welcome to the North Woods! I hope you have a great time.

We will be coming home the Monday after Memorial Day, and we were looking forward to a nice scenic ride home to Virginia. Gas, and overnight parking are a concern for me as we are planning this trip.

It's a great drive, my favorite way to leave Michigan if I'm heading West

What time of year are you looking at? If it's summertime, Lake Gogebic State Park is beautiful (as most michigan parks are), and wasn't very busy the past two times I was there.

If you're asking about places to park overnight for free, I'm not really sure. I forget if it was Michigan or Minnesota along US-2, but the Walmart was not allowing overnight except to commerical traffic per some county ordinance... thinking it was Michigan. Of course, the county owned its own expensive campground, go figure.

Why 2 is a very nice road and very scenic. I travel it every. A good portion of it right along Lake Michigan and it quite often can be pretty windy if that is at all a concern to you.

We took Hwy 2 from the Whitefish Point area - camped at Tahquamenon - and across the top, then turned off to head south to Green Bay. It's been a few years and I don't recall that there was much in the way of gas stations/restaurants. The road itself was good and a pretty, scenic drive. I would make sure to have a full tank when you head out. I do remember stopping at a terrific winery not far from where we headed south. If we had any wine left, I'd tell you the name, but you can just search Michigan Wineries if interested. When are you planning this? Probably not a stretch I'd want to travel if you're thinking before spring....whenever that is up there. Enjoy and be safe.
